Rishi Sunak has announced a snap general election for July 4. Confirming the date as he battled to be heard over the New Labour anthem Things Can Only Get Better, he vowed to "fight for every vote" in a defiant statement.
But polls aren't as optimistic, suggesting the Tories are on course to lose to Labour, leaving Mr Sunak bidding to overturn a 20-point deficit.
It comes after the Tory leader declared inflation was “back to normal” in a “major milestone” for the country, following official figures showing inflation slowed to 2.3 percent in April.
"These uncertain times call for a clear plan and bold action to chart a course to a secure future," he said. "You must choose in this election who has that plan."
Speculation about an announcement mounted in Westminster as cabinet ministers were summoned for an unusually timed meeting with defence secretary Grant Shapps and foreign secretary Lord Cameron cutting short foreign trips to attend.

The Prime Minister informed ministers of the election plan at the gathering. It comes after several Tory MPs submitted a letter of no confidence in Sunak, reports suggested.
One senior Conservative MP described the atmosphere in the tea room as “panic” amid an expected announcement about a general election.
A leading Tory Brexiteer said an election now would be “madness”. “Everyone mortified,” another source said.
Areas to watch out for this general election
The north-west of England is set to be a pivotal battleground in the upcoming General Election.
Burnley, Labour's top target seat, and Warrington South, the Conservatives' main focus, are both located in this region.
Five of Labour's top 10 targets and three of the Tories' top 10 are also found here.
Other key areas where the Conservatives and Labour will go head-to-head include the Midlands and Yorkshire, while the majority of crucial Conservative-Liberal Democrat battles are expected in southern England.
Scotland and Wales present opportunities for various parties to secure gains.
However, East Anglia may find itself largely sidelined during the campaign, with very few constituencies featuring on any party's list of battlegrounds.
