I unblocked my bathroom drain using plumber's £1.49 method which 'works all the time'

Blocked drains can be a hassle, not to mention an extra expense. Despite many unblocking methods recommending white vinegar and baking soda, one plumber has advised something else is "much better".

Whether it’s the bathroom drain or the kitchen, everyday items can easily block a drain, especially if the pipes are old.

Some items may appear flushable or it may be tempting to put a little food down the sink, but this can lead to an issue.

If you notice your shower or sink is taking a little longer than usual to drain, it may be worth carrying out some DIY methods before calling a plumber.

After noticing the sink in my bathroom was draining very slowly, I decided to investigate which would be the best method to try.

While using white vinegar down the drain is fine in most situations, its acidic nature can cause erosion to the pipes over time.

Posting on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Paige Willey wrote: “My drain is extremely blocked and I don’t want to spend hundreds on a plumber, can you help?

More than 30 comments appeared from other group members, with many people recommending trying soda crystals.

Becky Towson said: “Soda crystals are cheap and cheerful and I always have them on hand.”

Tracey Little mentioned: “My husband is a plumber and we use soda crystals followed by hot water every month to prevent and clear blockages, works all the time. We live in an old hour so it is always a problem.

“Unsure on white vinegar, hubby says it’s too strong.”

Paige Willey replied to her original comment and said that soda crystals helped her drain massively, adding that she hasn’t had a problem since.

I decided to try this hack as I already had soda crystals in my cleaning cupboard because they are extremely useful around the home.

I purchased the Elbow Grease soda crystals from The Range for around £1.49, but some stores do their own-brand too.

The packet instructions directed me to pour one scoop of soda crystals down the drain, wait five minutes and then pour a litre of boiling water down.

Due to my sink being made from ceramic, I didn’t want to use boiling water as it may crack so I used hot instead.

The soda crystal and boiling water combination worked brilliantly and it only took around five minutes to do.

It took a couple of days to notice that the drain had cleared but I haven’t had any problems since.
