It's no secret that property in London is expensive – but one woman just exposed the dire state of the rental market.

Eloise Hendy drawed attention to a recent post shared on Facebook that advertised a room that was available for "short term" rent. The advert was allegedly written by the owners' cats, and has raised a few eyebrows since.

Posting about the advert on X, formerly known as Twitter, Eloise wrote: "If you didn't already know that the London rental scene is the wild west, here is a post written in the voice of two cats, offering someone the chance to sleep in a living room. For £1000 a month."

It's fair to say the offering has left Brits gobsmacked, as they can't believe what was up for grabs for the price. In the post, the cats describe what the house is like, and say there is a "private space" a person could use.

They also say they're looking for a professional or student who are happy to rent the space, and "have them around" too. As well as this, they state a couple lives with them, but the female "is not around as much".

In the post, it's also stated there's a bathroom, dining room, kitchen and garden that they "all have to share". There's also a single bed in the room for someone to sleep in, as well as a desk in the corner to enable them to do some work.

The shared space can be all yours for a whooping £1,000 a month, and it's said to be located in Kensal Rise. It was described as being in an area that's good for tube and bus connections.

It's fair to say the post has got a lot of people talking, as they just can't believe how much it is to rent a single room in London. The fact that the ad was written by cats has also left a lot of people perplexed.

Eloise said it starts with "we are two cats", and just seems to get worse from that point onwards. But, what may surprise you is some people didn't think it was a bad deal. The pitch has left people a little torn – but it's certainly got people talking.

One person quipped: "£1,000 a month to share a room with strangers that pretend their cats have Facebook. Your kitten me right? Are they fur real."

A second wrote: "Never mind the cats, no privacy and no storage of any kind." Meanwhile, a third also chimed in with: "Apart from the creepy male hooman who lives in the kitchen, the fact they don't have a TV in the living room throwing up the reddest of red flags here."

Some people seemed to think it was a decent offer though, with one writing: "I live in London. I used to rent in central London. Ok, things have got worse since the 1990s - but I don’t find this advert so shocking tbh.

"If my cat loving son was looking to move out of his loft room in my house, this could be an option."

Another added: "Well to be fair it has a single bed in it and is a pretty large room. And it says it would be your own private space. I’d say that’s a decent deal, all inclusive. If I didn’t hate cat’s nor their owners I might even consider applying."
