British food enthusiasts have been left shocked after watching an American TikTok star try our traditional hot cross buns for the very first time.

Known to his three million followers as @kalanighosthunter on TikTok, Kalani Smith often reviews a variety of foods from across the globe, with a marked preference for British grub. His video content quite often takes him around the UK, trying out our national favourite nosh.

In the past, he's reviewed classic British snacks and sweets like chocolate Jammy Dodgers, Jelly Babies, and Space Raiders, alongside restaurants including Nando's, Greggs, and Toby Carvery. He also reveiwed his trips to Newcastle, Leeds, and Scotland.

Recently, the internet sensation set his sights on our treasured hot cross buns, curious to find out if they live up to their reputation. However, his technique to heat up his lemon and blueberry buns - sourced from Co-Op - rattled Brits.

The ghost hunter's review quickly attracted over 200,000 views and became inundated with comments.

In the video, Kalani stated: "As an American I always heard about hot cross buns but I have never had one, well today that changes. He planned to warm up the treats using an oven and some butter."

Yet, the entire process appeared to flummox the American, especially dealing with a British oven. He admitted: "There's a lot of buttons here. This might be the wrong way to do it, but, I'm always screwing up."

Nonetheless, he proceeded to pop two buns into the oven for approximately a minute and upon taking them out, he remarked they "look actually really yummy".

TikTok star Rate My Takeaway's Kalani gave his verdict on the treats, saying: "These little devils are good you can definitely taste the blueberry and the lemon, it's definitely a dessert role. This and a cup of tea would be magical."

The social media star, who reviews takeaways on his TikTok channel, gave the hot cross buns an impressive score of 9.5 out of 10.

However, many of his British fans were left baffled after he decided to warm them up in a pan - insisting that a toaster is the only way.

"The whole nation was screaming 'toaster' at you," joked one person, while another said: "Can we make him try these again but the correct way?"

"Sorry man, you're going to have to have another go at that," said a third.
