Rebecca Adlington 'relieved' after finding Olympic medals as her house was burgled
SWIMMER Rebecca Adlington feared her precious Olympic medals had been stolen after thieves broke into her home.
The London bronze medallist, who also won gold in the Beijing Olympics, took to Twitter to speak of her devastation at the break-in. "In absolute pieces," she told her followers, adding that she could "never replace" her medals.
However, Adlington later tweeted that her medal collection, including several for championship and Commonwealth wins, had been safely recovered, although she did not clarify where they had been found.
The swimmer, 24, had been at a restaurant in London when she heard that her Manchester home had been broken into.
While her medals were safe, her fiancé Harry Needs' car was stolen, as well as keys to the house.
Police in Greater Manchester released a statement regarding the break-in: "At about 12.20am on Tuesday 20 August, police were called to an address in Romiley, Stockport to reports of a burglary. A laptop and a black Audi A3 were stolen from the house. Nothing else was taken. Enquiries are ongoing."
Adlington posted, "The main thing I know is were safe. Life is more precious."
However, she shot back at Twitter trolls who taunted her over the break-in. "To anyone replying 'haha' or 'lol' you have obviously never worked hard for something to then have someone break into YOUR HOME to take them," she tweeted.
Adlington announced her retirement from swimming at the start of the year, six months after her Olympic glory, and is hoping to move into broadcasting.
