If there’s anything to learn from Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s that the savior of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Hugh Jackman in yellow tights. And with its massive celebrity cameos from Wesley Snipes as Blade, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm/the Human Torch, Channing Tatum as Gambit (!), and Jennifer Garner as Elektra, the latest Marvel flick is suiting up to become the biggest film of the summer not titled Inside Out 2 or Twisters. Hell, it may even kick-start a whole new era for Marvel Studios.

Any announcements about the road forward for these former Marvel properties will be made at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. While Deadpool & Wolverine contains both a mid-credits scene and a post-credits scene, audiences won’t see any updates about the next Marvel installment at the end of the film. That’s probably because the next few projects are a bit scattered across the vast multiverse that is the MCU. There’s Agatha All Along this September, Captain America: Brave New World next February, Thunderbolts next May, and The Fantastic Four next July. As for the return of Wolverine or any of his Fox friends, we’re likely looking way into the future.

So What Happens in Deadpool & Wolverine’s Mid-Credits Scene?

First off, viewers are treated to a mid-credits montage of behind-the-scenes footage from the 20th Century Fox–produced Marvel films. If you have any love for these movies—think Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Daredevil—you should probably have tissues at the ready.

As the credits roll, we catch Hugh Jackman suiting up as Wolverine for the first time. There’s also a glimpse of a young Chris Evans and Jessica Alba during their days as members of Marvel’s first family. We even see even some interviews from when Jackman and Reynolds first starred as Deadpool and Wolverine together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Disney completed its acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019—and therefore allowed its Marvel characters to join the MCU—so it’s a classy move from the Deadpool & Wolverine team. 20th Century Fox gave us some damn good superhero films over the years. (X-Men: Days of Future Past, anyone?) It deserves the tribute.

It’s always possible that Deadpool and Wolverine will reunite in the future.

What About the Post-Credits Scene?

Wipe your tears, folks, because the post-credits scene is all laughs. Deadpool and Wolverine ate shawarma at the end of the film, so referencing The Avengers’ post-credits scene is already checked off the list. Instead, Deadpool rolls back the tape to prove that he’s not as deranged as he appears. As it turns out, he wasn’t just throwing Johnny Storm under the bus when he insults Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin). The Fantastic Four member really did say all that crazy stuff about her. What ensues is a hilarious, expletive-filled rant from Evans’s Johnny. Honestly, it’s simply a great reminder that Evans has serious comedy chops, too.

I still wish we’d gotten a cameo from Marvel’s other Johnny—Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage)—but beggars can’t be choosers. If you wanted cameos, Deadpool & Wolverine certainly delivered.
