UNT was in the market for a late addition at quarterback following the departure of Earle.
Carson Woods
The senior was expected to compete with TCU transfer Chandler Morris for the starting job over the summer and came out of spring practice atop UNT’s depth chart.
Morris remained at TCU for the spring semester to finish his undergraduate degree and didn’t participate in spring workouts. Morris, a former Highland Park standout, has a long injury history and has been knocked out with injuries in each of the last two seasons at TCU.
UNT had just one other scholarship quarterback on the roster heading into the fall. The Mean Green’s staff is high on the long-term potential of Cash McCollum, a freshman who enrolled at the semester break.
Heading into the season with McCollum as its only scholarship quarterback other than Morris was a risk UNT wasn’t willing to take.
Woods, who is 6-foot and 185 pounds, thrived at Bakersfield. He threw for 2,597 yards and 19 touchdowns with just five interceptions last season.
Woods was a college prospect coming out of Liberty High in Bakersfield and received offers from a handful of smaller schools, including Pacific Lutheran and Western New Mexico. He passed on those opportunities to play on the junior college level.
Woods was offered a scholarship by Northwest Missouri State, a Division II program, following the 2023 season.
UNT offered the opportunity to play on the Football Bowl Subdivision level. The chance was one Woods jumped at.
He has three seasons of eligibility remaining and will add to what will be an intriguing run up to the 2024 season for UNT.
The Mean Green are now set to have two transfer quarterbacks on the roster who didn’t participate in spring practice.
Morris started the first six games of last season for the Horned Frogs before being sidelined for most of the rest of the year.
UNT’s coaches were looking at the prospect of working one quarterback into the mix who didn’t participate in spring drills in Morris just a few weeks ago.
Now UNT will have two players in that situation with the arrival of Woods.
Both will compete to take over for Chandler Rogers. The Louisiana-Monroe transfer arrived at UNT before the 2023 season and excelled while throwing for 3,382 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Rogers entered the transfer portal after last season and landed at Cal.
