00:00 And in this context, as Mexico praises to elect a new president on Sunday June 2nd,
00:05 we welcome our collaborator Jorge Gestoso from Mexico City with the latest updates.
00:10 Hello Jorge, welcome from the South.
00:12 What can you tell us as we are days ahead of the elections in the country?
00:17 Alejandra, the National Electoral Institute was having a press conference this afternoon
00:27 with some new highlights.
00:30 They're confirming that, for example, what is considered that a pre-official count of votes
00:38 is going to take place, a preliminary count of votes is to take place at 10 p.m. on Sunday,
00:46 that at midnight is going to be a rapid count of votes, and the official tally of the votes
00:54 is going to commence the process again for the electoral presidential campaign on Wednesday.
01:03 But most definitely by midnight, the Mexicans and all the world is going to know who is going to be,
01:11 according to the trends, the next president of the state of Mexico.
01:17 On the other hand, they say that 87 percent of the ballots has already been delivered,
01:22 90 percent will be delivered by tomorrow, 1,300 international observers will be participating
01:31 in the electoral vote, that the vote is not officially mandatory, meaning that the Constitution
01:40 mentions that the vote should be mandatory, but in reality there's no
01:51 punishment for not voting, therefore for the average Mexican it considers that it's no mandatory
01:58 the vote, but there is expectation that about more than 60 percent of the electoral is going to
02:06 go to the polls, probably they believe that could be a record of the participation.
02:12 Also there is another information that regarding to the ages, mostly women are going to be
02:22 participating more than men, and most probably more young voters are going to be involved in
02:29 this process. So far, as you were mentioning, last night they closed the campaigns, the three
02:37 candidates, and today we are starting a period of reflection that is going to last until Sunday,
02:46 that Sunday morning at 8, the polls are going to open by 6 p.m., are going to close, and after that
02:54 is going to be the quick count of votes. We are talking that there is a clear trend according to
03:05 what the preference of the voters throughout the last six months has been pretty much clear, and
03:16 the difference between the first and the second is quite comfortable, which if that confirms the poll
03:24 that could help that the results are going to come earlier or sooner than in another cases.
03:32 And regarding the nine governships that are going to be taking the elections on Sunday,
03:41 that information is going to be revealed by the local, international, and also regarding the
03:53 tribunal of votes, it's not the national votes, and regarding what it has to do with different
04:04 areas, they say that they're going to be able to deliver the amount of votes, the tally of the
04:10 votes pretty quickly, they don't anticipate any delay or any conflict. Always, what could be a
04:20 factor could be eventually violence, even the last day of the campaigns, the day of the closing of
04:28 the campaigns, of the three campaigns, there were two candidates that has to do with not with the
04:34 presidential candidates, but candidates in another areas of the country who has been assassinated,
04:41 and throughout the campaign, 29 candidates have been assassinated. So, violence has been present
04:49 very much in this campaign. Now, we get back to you, Alexandra.
04:54 Thank you. Thank you, Jorge Gestosa, for your input. We will contact you again as
04:59 we continue to follow the electoral process in Mexico.
