Narodila se jako dcera obchodního cestujícího. Rok strávila na vysoké škole, poté pracovala jako tanečnice a asistentka kouzelníka. Po krátkém manželství si zahrála malou roli v EASY TO LOVE (1953), působila v televizi i na Brodwayi. Studovala v Actors Studio slavného Lee Strasberga a provdala se za režiséra Jacka Garfeina, s nímž měla dceru Blanche.
