A lot of people have been wondering whether the golden age of TV is over and while 2024 wasn't it's biggest year, it absolutely still proved that excellent TV is out there still. From super horny British dramedies to the most wild game shows, TV has really come a long way this past year. And while it's still absolutely overwhelming considering how many episodes some of the shows have and the dozens of schedules you have to keep up with to make sure you don't see a single spoiler on your TL, somehow I managed to narrow it down to 15 of my biggest faves of the year. Some of them might even surprise you and hopefully, you'll sneak it one last binge watch before the year ends. Either way, you're definitely going to be obsessed with these picks for the best TV shows of 2024!
'Shōgun' (Season 1 - FX)
In a time where people try to really question to power of TV and telling a story over time, FX's Shōgun proved to everyone what kind of force it can become. It is, without a doubt, a masterpiece and one we're grateful to be getting more of. Anna Sawai's performance is one that we'll take with us for years to come. And seeing everyone's story unravel episode by episode, week by week, became a masterclass in storytelling. It proved to questioning audiences that with the right story, talent, and passion, TV can be one of the most moving and incredible mediums that we have.
'Hacks' (Season 3 - Max)
Oh, Hannah Einbinder, we will avenge you. Deborah Vance might be the one on top this season, but it is Hannah's performance as Ava that had us giving standing ovations in our living rooms as she finally went toe-to-toe with her on-again-off-again boss. The show continues to wonderfully tackle the nuances and challenges of being a woman in the industry in a refreshing and open way. And in the final moments, we finally get to see Ava shine in a brand new way that we haven't seen before that gets us ready for a showdown unlike any other in the show's upcoming season. Thankfully, it doesn't sacrifice any of the bite and laughs to help set up what's next and we can't wait to see how it all goes down.
'English Teacher' (Season 1 - FX)
For once, we don't mind going to this masterclass of comedy that is both fresh, funny, and absolutely heartwarming. Focusing on a school in Dallas, TX, the FX series manages to balance strong topics like gun control and the AI takeover with some good feel fun. With some of the strongest guest stars in TV this season, like Jenn Lyon, Andrene Ward-Hammond, and Romy Mars, and plenty of iconic music moments, this special gift of a show is a gift. And in the brilliant words of BJA, "Stream English Teacher on Hulu."
'Industry' (Season 3 - HBO)
As much as I understand the Industry hype, I had to give this one to my colleague Emma Baty to sound off on her top show of the year:
“I’ve been riding the Industry train for a while now, so while I am biased, the show really upped its game in season 3. By taking these characters out of the fictional bank in which they work and into the real world, we got to see even more layers to these already-very-complicated people. In addition to the stellar main cast, (Myha’la, Marisa Abela, Harry Lawtey, and Ken Leung) Kit Harington came into the season and gave an incredibly funny performance as failson aristocrat-turned-CEO Henry Muck. The show is consistently a blast to watch, and while I have no idea how they’re going to write season 4 after that season 3 finale, I find that’s usually when the best TV gets made.”
'Rivals' (Season 1 - Hulu)
Oh, how we've been waiting for a fiery and sexy show like this one. We're transported to the 1980s in the English countryside where a a battle for a local television license has everyone hot and bothered. Affairs, longing, and pathetic men are just some of the small joys that you have to look forward to. There's even a beautiful romantic story in the middle of it all. But most importantly, this show fucks and we could all use the climax that it's offering us right now.
'Game Changer' (Season 6 - Dropout)
This list could honestly be the entire Dropout catalog, but then we wouldn't be able to list every other show we want to add. (Special shout out to Very Important People, Smartypants, Make Some Noise, Dimension 20, and the newly premiered Nobody Asked). But Game Changer keeps pushing the envelope with it's unique premise. Every episode is different. Many of them designed as a special torture trap for Dropout star Brennan Lee Mulligan. Between an episode that forces contestants to find random buzzers to a The Circle-inspired special, it is an incredible gift every single time. The ultimate game changer is just how this show and the rest of the Dropout platform has become a must-have in our lives, and this is just the beginning for it.
'The Penguin' (Miniseries - Max)
I have to admit, I was a little skeptical going into this. Like many others, I really questioned whether we needed an Oz-focused story. But DC proved me wrong while also confirming my long-standing theory that the DC universe tends to thrive in TV settings more than films. But it's Cristin Milioti's performance as Sofia Falcone alongside Lauren LeFranc's brilliant ideas that takes it all to the next level. It's messy, it's glorious, and it gives an iconic character a much-needed new life. The ability to also follow them for a larger amount of time also humanizes them in a refreshing way that we've long been wanting from our villains. Hopefully, DC takes note.
'My Lady Jane' (Season 1 - Prime Video)
Apparently history does repeat itself despite how much this story really did not want to. Lady Jane Grey might have gotten the axe with its (undeserved) cancellation, but at least we got one season of this glorious, wild, and lovely series that gave us a glimpse of what things could be like if she was never executed. Jane and Gilford's romance is one that we'll forever remember (along with all the horse memes) and we truly need to see more of comedy actor™ Dominic Cooper in our lives. While the fandom continues to fight for another season, we're glad we got to say that such a show like this one even got made. Hopefully, it sparks more of it because we surely do need it.
'DAN DA DAN' (Season 1 - Science Saru)
Listen, the first episode takes a watch or two to really get over, well, everything. But strangely, this show about ghosts and aliens who seem obsessed with stealing "bananas" and gold balls, IYKYK, also happens to be one of the most romantic stories of the year. The love story between Ayase and Okarun is one of the incredible things we've seen all year. And part of the fun is seeing just how unafraid this show is in being weird. It's also pretty incredible to see an anime that pushes the envelope of what a shonen and shojo show should look like and what it needs to be successful. A shonen can have a really good love story as its central part and I hope more studios take note.
'The Traitors' (Season 2 - Peacock)
If you had told me that in the year of 2024 that I would defending my number one The Challenge fave CT Tamburello, I would have never believed you. But then, that's just the kind of power that The Traitors has now that its popularity, along with Alan Cumming's wardrobe budget, has skyrocketed. There's a special obsession with the show that we and all our group chats just cannot get enough of. This is what Celebrity Big Brother wished it was able to do. We're already taking our guesses as to who will be joining next. Hey, Traitors, call us cause we'd be so down if you are.
'Nobody Wants This' (Season 1 - Netflix)
We've been mourning the loss of Hot Priest for many years, but now our prayers have been answered. This time thanks to Adam Brody's portrayal of Noah AKA Hot Rabbi. His chemistry with Kristen Bell's Joanne truly radiates off the screen as they try to figure out their new relationship while also coming to real terms with the fact that everything about their paths says they shouldn't be together. But we can't help but root for them and their love as they try to figure it all out. It's a honest and realistic love story for the current time and while it can improve in some other ways, especially with its portrayal of Jewish women, it's still give us that sweet feeling inside that we've long been wanting from our favorite shows.
'Pokémon Concierge' (Season 1 - Netflix)
With only 3 days left in 2023, Netflix dropped the biggest surprise and yes, we are totally counting it for this year because it was too late to add to our list last year. The stop-motion Pokémon series is a non-stop delight that brings together some of the warmth of the original version while taking us on a tropical vacation that we definitely wish we could take right this second. And it feels like the right kind of series that grown up fans have been waiting for in nice, bite-sized episodes. It's the kind of beautiful and positive series that will always give feel like a pick-me-up whenever you need it. Thanks for the escape, Pokémon Concierge. It's been the best stay!
'Fallout' (Season 1 - Prime Video)
After years of horrible game adaptations, things quickly took a turn after the big success of The Last of Us. And thankfully it seems like the rest of the industry is catching on and Fallout very much filled its place as we waited for season 2. Ella Purnell's role as Lucy, a long-time vault dweller who sets on to find her father out in the world, is one to watch. And then there's Walton Goggins' The Ghoul is one that will stay with us, especially as we discover more of what made him the wild cowboy he is today. It's a love letter to the iconic video game that fans have been waiting for and also shows that TV might be the best medium to translate these vast and incredible stories for a new audience.
'Colin From Accounts' (Season 2 - Paramount+)
The hilarious and incredibly Aussie comedy from down under takes a little of a turn this season as Gordon and Ashley's relationship gets tested more than ever. With an additional focus on the wider net of characters that is their friends and family all around them, Colin From Accounts has now become an unexpected and heartfelt ensemble comedy that is unafraid to get messy when it comes to relationships. If only we can also get a cute dog to help us find love.
'Agatha All Along' (Miniseries - Disney+)
Never would I ever have imagined being able to write the word Patti LuPone is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but apparently, anything is absolutely possible. Kathryn Hahn is now at the forefront as we discover Agatha many years after Wanda's takeover of Westview. And while some of the show's biggest secrets were revealed earlier thanks to some eagle-eyed viewers, no one could've guessed the other twists the Witches' Road had in store for us. With some Emmy-contending performances and a nice twist in the future of the MCU, Agatha All Along truly put us under its spell.
