Background: Project Tempo is a United Kingdom–based nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that has surveyed nearly 50,000 voters across 24 EU countries and the United Kingdom. Through this extensive research, the organization identified segments of the electorate and shifts in sentiment that are transforming politics across Europe. To provide deeper understanding, Project Tempo created six separate indexes, assigning nations a score for each. These indexes highlight areas impacting decarbonization, growth and productivity, offering a clear picture of each nation’s performance against these metrics.
The main purpose is to use insights to foster positive change on a national level through policy solutions and strategies. Project Tempo’s unique approach emphasizes both sustainability and productivity, acknowledging the economic and political realities each country faces. The site is designed primarily for policymakers, researchers, other nonprofits and engaged citizens who seek to understand and address the complex challenges of modern society.
Design core: The core features include interactive indexes—Tempo Index, Emissions and Intensity, Forgotten Voter, Climate Support, Economic Underperformance, and Opportunity—that are mapped to 25 countries. Another major feature area is the Resource Hub, which provides extensive content and data insights for registered users. Our design goal was to create signature visualizations and implement an intuitive user experience that enables deeper discovery and surfaces valuable insights.
Favorite details: The opportunity to design and develop new visualizations around this unique set of data. These visualizations were designed to make complex information more understandable while highlighting critical insights in an engaging, impactful way. Given the political upheaval sweeping across Europe at this time, the insights provided by Project Tempo are more relevant and important than ever. By effectively presenting this data, we hope to foster a deeper understanding and drive meaningful discussions and actions.
Challenges: Ensuring the visualizations effectively conveyed complex data in a clear, engaging manner. Designing the interface as the data was coming in was also a challenge, but we were fortunate to work closely with our partners at Project Tempo. This collaboration let us adapt quickly and create a cohesive, impactful user experience in the final product.
Navigation structure: The navigation structure was designed to be intuitive and accessible, enabling users to easily access the six indexes and the Resource Hub. The goal was to facilitate seamless exploration of data and insights, making it straightforward for users to get to the information.
Technology: For this project, we used React with Next.js to create the site and D3.js helpers for the various visualizations across multiple pages. We deployed Sanity as the content management system, and to help create more dynamic visualizations, we used p5.js.
