CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The Guardians left Cowtown with who they hope will soon be ‘Best in Show.’

The organization had their first ever No. 1 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, which they had just a two percent chance of getting.

The Guardians selected a powerhouse hitter in Travis Bazzana, a second baseman from Oregon State.

After the third and final day of the Draft wrapped up, Guardians’ Senior Vice President of Scouting, Paul Gillispie addressed the media on their 21 selections.

“Coming into the Spring, knowing we had the biggest bonus pool in the history of the sport, that actually carried a little bit of extra weight,” Gillispie said. “And gives you a sense of pride but also responsibility to do everything you can to put the organization in a great spot.”

Out of their 21 picks, the Guardians used 16 of them on pitchers.

“In terms of adding them into the pipeline we have,” Gillispie said. “It’s a good group of pitchers and a good mix of things that they do well.”

The Guardians have agreed to terms with Bazzana whose slot value at No. 1 was $10.57 million, but the deal is pending a complete physical before anything is official.
