A remarkably singular example from the Baku region by a daring and consummately skilled artist, it is a riveting tribal rug. Borrowing only the "keyhole" central field ornament and the carnation outer border from the local design pool, the weaver grounded her design with a powerful triple 8-point star medallion axis that she amplified with a rare green dye at both ends. Brilliantly framing this configuration is a diagonal stripe pattern in the main border, an impressively effective choice. The impact is exciting in the way Caucasian Kazak rugs are. All of its motifs are drawn with unfathomable precision combined with creative fluidity. The light-hearted tertiary ornaments, including crowned fowl, bodacious boteh seeds, and whimsical diamonds and disks (placed with spontaneous aplomb), tellingly expand the emotional impact on the viewer. Because of its remarkable condition, the unusually fine knotting, deeply lustrous wool, and tremendously luminous natural dyed colors offered by this standout tribal rug can be enjoyed on the floor or as a dramatic wall hanging.
