An Ainu flag was designed by Bikki Sunazawa, a Japanese sculptor of Ainu ancestry, in 1973. In 2020 Bikki's son claimed copyright ownership and requested disuse of the flag. Upon a repeated request from his friend, Bikki Sunazawa eventually designed the flag in 1973 although he distanced himself from political activism seeking government support.

Nov 3, 2007 · The white contemporary ‘Bikky mon’yo’ (Bikky design) represents the harsh snows of Hokkaido, which Bikky believed made the Ainu strong. Today the flag is occasionally seen at Ainu functions. Bikky had little patience with Ainu who made being Ainu their only occupation, expecting the Japanese government to support them.
