Terrell Davis recently took to his Instagram page to share that he was handcuffed and removed from a Denver to Orange County, California, United Airlines flight on Saturday (July 13) after he tapped a flight attendant’s arm to ask for ice.

On Wednesday (July 17), the NFL Hall of Famer and his wife, Tamiko Davis, sat down with Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America” and opened up about how he felt about the “disturbing and traumatizing incident” that happened in front of his family. “I felt demoralized. I felt embarrassed, humiliated. I felt like my dignity was stripped from me right in front of my children and my family. I want United to be held accountable," he said.

Terell explained that when his son asked for ice, the flight attendant did not hear this request."I just tapped him on the shoulder. He swings his arm back and said, 'Don’t hit me!'" he said, before adding that a man sitting in front of him turned around and assured him that he witnessed the interaction and that Davis did not hit him. When the plane landed, everyone was asked to remain seated while six FBI agents and sheriff’s deputies walked through the plane.

“They told everyone on the plane to remain in their seats,” the former Denver Broncos player said. “All of a sudden, you can hear… all the gear and the walkie-talkies and a lot of commotion. I peeked into the aisle, and I see all the agents. I see FBI on the jacket, I see the green of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.”

He continued, “The agent walks up to me, and he leans over and whispers in my ear, he says,  ‘Don’t fight it’ and puts cuffs on me. I felt powerless. I felt embarrassed. … I didn’t get a chance to explain what was happening. He didn’t tell me what was happening.” Tamiko added, “I thought it was a joke, because what else could it be? I'm looking at looking at my sons who are sitting right next to him, watching their dad being handcuffed. And what could we do? And I'm asking them, 'What is going on?' Like why are you doing this?"

Terrell hopes to "effect change" by speaking out. "Lots of people have contacted me after this, and they're sending me text messages saying that the same thing happened to them," he said.

United Airlines has released a statement confirming that Terrell was mistreated, according to NBC Sports. “This is clearly not the kind of travel experience we strive to provide, and we have reached out to Mr. Davis’s team to apologize. We have removed the flight attendant from duty while we closely review this matter,” the statement read.
