President Joe Biden Responds to Donald Trump Rally Shooting in Oval Office Address

"The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It's time to cool it down,” the President said.

On Sunday (July 14) night, President Joe Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office, stating that the assassination attempt against Donald Trump requires Americans "to take a step back," according to CBS News. 

"We can't allow this violence to be normalized," Biden said. "The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It's time to cool it down. We all have a responsibility to do that…Politics must never be a literal battlefield, God forbid, a killing field." 

The 81-year-old also mentioned several violent political acts that happened in the past few years, including the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol, the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and the attack on the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "The power to change America should always rest in the hands of the people, not in the hands of a would-be assassin," he said.

As previously reported by BET, Trump was rushed offstage by the Secret Service after being shot at during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday (July 13). The suspect is no longer a threat. "Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. "This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available." The FBI identified the shooter, who also killed one person at the rally, as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania,
