You're not alone in thinking that there's simply too much choice in the bedding market these days. With new product launches and startups popping up at a staggering rate, it can be tough to determine the best bedding products for you.
Our first-annual Bedding Awards aims to cut through the marketing claims to tout only products that we've tested or researched ourselves. Quality craftsmanship and materials, longevity, and balanced comfort are the things that we look for in the best bedding products, while knowing of course that all bodies and sleep preferences differ.
Without further ado, check out the 20 products that we've named as the best in our first-ever Bedding Awards list.
Filled with humanely sourced duck down, the 600-fill-power Casper Down Duvet is every bit as strategically engineered as the brand's mattresses. A departure from traditional baffle-box quilting, the down duvet's sewn-through seams create slim, rectangular chambers that hold the down to retain its fluffiness.
Although its outer shell fabric is crinkly, it's also very lightweight and doesn't affect the comfort level. The duvet's pillowy texture and rectangular quilting is adept at facilitating airflow, making the piece feel very puffy, but not bulky.
This duvet is available to purchase in sizes twin/twin-XL, full/queen, and king/California king.
Wamsutta Cool & Fresh Down Alternative Comforter
This down-alternative comforter from Wamsutta is stuffed with Comforel FreshFX fiberfill, a polyester-based material that's meant to reduce heat retention. Reviewers give it top marks in its quality and value, saying that it's fluffy, breathable, and compatible with any season.
Its 400-thread-count cover comprises a cotton/poly blend that contains Coolmax Core performance fibers, which add to that cool-to-the-touch feel.
This comforter is available in sizes twin, full/queen, and king.
The Buffy Breeze is made entirely from eucalyptus fiber — its outer shell feels cool on contact and is effective at wicking away body heat, while the comforter itself keeps the sleeper warm while not enveloping them in stifling, heavy material.
This comforter is the ideal thickness for summertime, naturally hot bedrooms, or sleepers who run hot. It’s much thinner than a regular comforter, and it ditches puffy baffle-box stitching for sleek channels that hold the lyocell fill. With a duvet cover on, you won’t get as much of the cool feeling transfer, however, its weight still makes it great for sleeping with. And yes, it’s equipped with corner loops for securing that duvet cover.
This comforter comes in sizes twin/XL, full/queen, and king/California king.
The Brooklinen Luxe Hardcore Sheet Set is a longtime favorite of ours, because the material is exceptionally well made for a fair price. These long-staple cotton sateen sheets have a 480 thread count, which strikes the right balance between crisp and casual.
They're way more flexible and breathable than hotel-quality starched linens — yet their tight weave is smooth, soft, and not see-though whatsoever. All sizes of this core set come with a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases.
This sheet comes in sizes twin/XL, full, queen, king, and California king, and in nine core colors.
The Lands' End Garment-Washed Linen Sheets are made from OEKO-TEX-certified Belgian flax, and are prewashed for a feel that’s far softer than linen’s traditionally grittier texture.
From our in-house test, they got high marks for breathability and their casual, broken-in quality. They also wear beautifully with time and washing.
The set comes with flat and fitted sheets, and depending on your chosen size, either one or two standard or king-size pillowcases.
These sheets are available in sizes twin, full, queen, and king, and they come in five colors.
The Layla Bamboo Sheets are made of bamboo-derived viscose and have a soft and slinky feel. These sheets are noticeably cool to the touch and reasonably lightweight. They’re a great all-season set, as they don’t have the open-weave texture of linen, but they do offer more breathability than a cotton sateen set.
These sheets also wash well and haven’t shown much wear or shrinkage over time. The Layla Bamboo Sheets have a more casual drape, so they won't give you elegantly starched pillowcase corners. This doesn’t negatively impact the look of the bed, but it may be noticeable if you tend to favor all-cotton bedding.
The set comes with a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and either one or two standard or king-sized pillow cases.
These sheets are available in twin/XL, full, queen, king, split king, and California king and come in white or gray.
The bamboo-rayon sheets from My Sheets Rock have a light, breathable feel and a stretchy drape. They are well worth the investment for their durability and "breeziness," says one reviewer.
They have a texture that's silkier than cotton and needs less breaking-in time, and the bamboo is also pleasantly cool to the touch. This is another great choice for hot sleepers.
Available in eight different shades, these sheets come in sizes twin, full, queen, king, split king, and California king.
Made of 100% mulberry silk, these sheets from Lilysilk are some of the best quality you can buy. In terms of weave quality, 19 momme is a weight that feels light and airy, yet substantially insulating.
These sheets make up the bed with a lovely sheen and irresistible smoothness, though because silk is not the most breathable fabric, they're really best for those who run cold at night. The set is available to purchase in individual pieces — not only as sheets, but as pillowcases, a duvet cover, and a bedskirt, too.
These silk sheets are available in twin, full, queen, king, and California kind sizes, and they also come in a wide range of 14 hues.
The Leesa Hybrid pillow’s unique construction may look a little strange, but it actually checks a lot of boxes, comfort-wise. Each side offers a completely different textural experience — one side has cushioned microfiber quilting that nestles the head and neck, and the other is flatter and much firmer, but is layered with a ventilated cooling gel directly underneath the pillow's surface. Even when covered with a thick pillowcase, the cooling sensation is still effectively transferred to the skin.
Although it’s on the heavier side, it's much more breathable and cushy than it looks. It has a low loft and is decently spoonable, but its form isn’t adjustable. No matter which side of it you sleep on, the Leesa Hybrid pillow is engineered to keep the user feeling nestled and cool, while maintaining correct body alignment for side sleepers.
This pillow is available in a standard and queen size.
The construction of Parachute's Down Side Sleeper Pillow is unique in that it is more rectangular in shape than a regular pillow, and it features a 3.5-inch border gusset.
This gusset is a standout feature that really helps the pillow retain its structure. It helps keep the neck in alignment, and it gives this pillow a backbone that most down pillows completely lack. The down fill comprises European white duck down and feather fibers, and comes from a certified Responsible Down Standard supplier. This pillow is generously stuffed, light as a feather, and very responsive.
While the gusseted border doesn't make it great for spooning, the Parachute Side-Sleeper Pillow is intelligently constructed and a pleasure to sleep on.
The Parachute Down Side-Sleeper Pillow is available in a standard and king size.
The Bedgear Storm 1.0 pillow is just one of a four-pillow collection — they're all the same apart from their ventilated border gusset, which is available in four different heights depending on how you sleep.
The pillow’s Ver-Tex fabric is incredibly cool and smooth to the touch. It’s woven in a textured, geometric pattern that feels good against the skin, but also looks good if you opt to sleep with it sans cover. It has balanced firmness and a effective cooling sensation, although due to its unique material, it can be a little slippery.
The Bedgear Storm Series pillows are available in a standard pillow size.
Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector
This cooling mattress protector from Brooklyn Bedding provides a hypoallergenic, waterproof barrier between your sheets and your mattress. It is also woven with a proprietary, conductive material that feels noticeably cool on contact, and it transfers this sensation very effectively through your sheets.
The material of this super-smooth mattress protector can make the sheets on the bed feel a little slick, which some sleepers might not like. However, this reduced friction is still well worth the refreshing temperature regulation that a regular protector just doesn't provide. It adds a cool-side-of-the pillow feeling to your entire bed without having to toss and turn to get there.
This mattress protector comes in twin/XL, full, queen, king, and California king sizes.
Even if you're normally a champion sleeper regardless of your bedding, pregnancy can throw you for a loop. The Snoogle body pillow is touted by thousands of reviewers (our own editor included) as being able to drastically help.
It has an elongated C shape to provide support to the neck, belly, and hips to help prevent tossing and turning. It's stuffed with malleable, non-heat-retaining polyester and is covered with a washable pillowcase that also keeps you cool.
The Nectar Foam Mattress is a four-layer, CertiPUR-US-certified memory foam mattress, which is covered by an OEKO-TEX-certified Tencel-fabric cover.
This 11-inch-high mattress is on the firm side (particularly for side sleepers), but its top quilted-gel memory foam layer comfortably contours the body and is very responsive. There is no unstable "sinking" feeling or uncomfortable pushback — plus, there's also virtually no motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other, making this mattress a great pick for couples, as well.
This mattress is available in sizes twin, full, queen, king, and California king.
Helix currently offers seven different hybrid mattresses of varying pressure-relief and body-contouring support levels, along with a Luxe version of each mattress that provides more lumbar support, a pillow-top surface, and a cooling cover.
Users can take a free quiz on their site to match with the mattress that is best suited for their sleep preferences. We were paired with and have the most experience sleeping on the Helix Midnight.
This hybrid design comprises two layers of memory foam above a layer of hundreds of individually wrapped coils, which is above a foundational foam base layer. Its dual-layer cover simultaneously provides softness along with increased airflow. Although firmly supportive, this mattress is also fairly cool and incredibly comfortable.
This mattress is available from sizes twin, full, queen, king, and California king.
A favorite innerspring mattress of Wirecutter and many other mattress-review sites, the Saatva is a luxury-quality mattress that features individually wrapped coils, enhanced lumbar support, and a dense foam perimeter, covered by a fluffy, organic-cotton pillowtop.
While it doesn't have the reduced motion transfer of a foam mattress, this is the type of bed to get if the luxe, hotel-quality feel is most important to you. Choose between an 11.5- or 14.5-inch height along with your firmness level: Plush Soft, Firm, or Luxury Firm.
This mattress is available in sizes twin/XL, full, queen, king, and California king.
Yes, Floyd's Platform Bed is the stuff of Instagram-bedroom dreams, but we don't love it just for its minimalist looks: It's a feat of modular design.
It comes in three sizes, but its slatted-panel design lets users start with one size and either build onto it or downsize it over time. There's even the option of adding a matching wooden headboard or underbed storage drawers. Any mattress can sit right on top of the platform, without the need for a boxspring.
The bed frame is available in five different wood finishes, but all mainly comprise birch plywood with either a birch or FSC-certified walnut veneer. It stands on short, powder-coated steel legs that provide stability. Users can assemble the Floyd Platform Bed themselves with no special tools needed.
This bed frame is available in a twin, full/queen, and king.
For those who want the ability to sit up in bed, whether for health-related reasons or just to more comfortably watch TV, an adjustable base is the answer.
The FlexFit 3 Base from Sleep Number has smart, smartphone-enabled functionality that includes head and foot adjustment, foot warming, and even underbed lighting. The bed also comes in a split-bed option, which allows you to use these functions independently. It has seven adjustable height settings, ranging from 13.75 inches to 18.25 inches tall.
This Sleep Number adjustable base is compatible with Sleep Number 360 mattresses, but it can potentially be used with a foam mattress that you already own. Innerspring or hybrid mattresses may not be as compatible, due to the rigidity of their construction.
This adjustable base comes in a full, queen, king, California king, with split-bed options in king and California king.
If you're not in the market for a new mattress, but you want to make your current sleep surface a little softer, the Layla Mattress Topper is a premium-quality layer that adds 2 extra inches of coziness.
It's equipped with a patterned, soft, and cooling cover, and this piece has copper cells that are infused within its all-foam core for antimicrobial enhancement. Users like that it doesn't add too much bulk to their existing bed height, and they note that it significantly softens the feel of the mattress.
This mattress topper is available in a twin/XL, full, queen, king, and California king size.
A good air mattress is essential for overnight hosts, frequent travelers, or for anyone who simply needs a spare place to sleep at home if the couch doesn't cut it. The Beautyrest Silver Lumbar Lux is an investment and available in just one bed size, but its construction, easy-to-inflate setup, and intelligent design makes it a justifiable purchase.
This queen-sized air mattress has a built-in pump, which allows users to turn a dial to inflate or deflate it in minutes. Its middle, horizontal channels have dedicated air pockets that give added lumbar support to counteract the usual sinking in the middle that happens with nearly all traditional air mattresses.
Plus, it even has edge support, so you don't have to barrel-roll out of bed in the morning.
