After the Queen Mother narrowly avoided assassination by the IRA during a visit to Ballymena, protection officers insisted that she travel by helicopter rather than road when visiting Northern Ireland.

“The choppers have made more difference to my life than any queen since dear old Anne Boleyn,” she observed drily.
