Fortnightly bin collections begin in town

Bin collections on alternating weeks have been brought in across Wokingham.

Residents have been given a new black wheeled rubbish bin to replace a blue bag system.

Only one full wheeled bin, which holds 180 litres of rubbish - equivalent to about two blue bags - will be collected.

Wokingham Borough Council said additional rubbish and overly full bins, with their lids not fully down, would not be collected.

The authority said the fortnightly collections could mean residents would need to recycle more, or reduce their waste.

It added the change, which has seen more than 60,000 black wheelie bins delivered to residents, had been brought in to reduce "our environmental impact and make essential savings".

Green recycling sacks are still in place for recyclable rubbish, and food waste collections remain weekly.

Alongside their new bin, residents have been given a calendar showing which of collections fall each week until July 2025.

Alternative arrangements have been made for some residents living in flats or properties with no space for wheeled bins.
