Injured Argentina international Pedro Rubiolo has joined Bristol Bears on loan for the rest of the season ahead of a permanent summer move from Newcastle Falcons.
Rubiolo, 21, is currently recovering from a season-ending foot injury sustained last month and will now continue his rehabilitation with the Bears.
It was announced in November that the Pumas second row would move to Ashton Gate on a "long-term" contract from Newcastle at the end of the current season.
But that move has been accelerated with Rubiolo, who has 20 international caps, having had surgery on his injured foot, ruling him out for the rest of the term.
"It's the mature decision for everybody because realistically Pedro isn't going to play again this season, and this just gives him a chance to work with Bristol's medical team and settle into his new surroundings," Newcastle's director of rugby Steve Diamond told the club's website., external
"I'm disappointed I didn't get the chance to work much with Pedro due to his injuries and international call-ups, but by all accounts he's a great lad and he's been nothing but professional during his time with the Falcons."
Bears director of rugby Pat Lam said it was an opportunity to "integrate" Rubiolo into the club environment and "build strong relationships" with the players.
"Alongside working hard with our medical and athletic performance teams on his recovery, as we look to get him fit and firing for next season," Lam said.
