Town's new zig-zag walkway opens after two years

A new zig-zag walkway linking North Shields town centre with the Fish Quay has opened to the public.
North Tyneside Council (NTC) said the path, which allows step-free access down a steep embankment, would make it easier for people to enjoy the quayside's hospitality venues.
Work began on the project in 2022 but its completion was delayed due to what the council said were "several challenging areas underground".
NTC described the end result as "fantastic", however, and thanked residents and businesses for their patience during the construction work.
'Hugely complex project'
A series of sheet pile retaining walls and reinforced earth slopes were built.
Some local residents complained about the noise and disruption generated by the works.
Funding for the regeneration scheme was provided by the North East Combined Authority from the region's Transforming Cities Fund.
North Tyneside's deputy mayor, Councillor Carl Johnson, is the cabinet member responsible for regeneration, culture and economic development.
He said: "For a long time people have been telling us they wanted better pedestrian links between the town centre and the Fish Quay.
"The walkway has been a hugely complex project and it has presented different challenges along the way.
"We know it has caused noise and disruption for residents and businesses nearby, and we sincerely apologise for that.
"The end result is fantastic, and I'm delighted to see it finished in time for Christmas 2024 and the North Shields 800 celebrations in 2025."
