Share these sports day activities with your child…

For this sports day, you will need

  • A stopwatch, clock, or someone who can count to 60 seconds
  • A way of recording scores (for example, pen and paper)
  • A rolled-up pair of socks, football, or another kind of ball
  • A bucket, washing basket, or similar container
  • A balloon

Round 1 - Balloon keepy-ups

For this activity, you'll need the balloon, pen and paper and a way of keeping time (this could be a stopwatch, phone, or a family member who can count to 60).

The aim of this activity is to keep the balloon in the air (without it touching the floor, or furniture), touching it as many times as possible within 60 seconds.

Here's how to play…

  • Hold the balloon in your hands above your head.
  • Let go of the balloon.
  • Use different parts of your body to keep the balloon in the air.
  • You can't use the same body part twice in a row.
  • You can't stand in the same spot.
  • You earn a point every time you touch the balloon.

Round 2 - Star jumps

For this activity you'll need a pen and paper and a way of keeping time (this could be a stopwatch, phone, or a family member who can count to 60).

Make sure someone marks a point for every star jump you do in 60 seconds. Can you beat your family members?

How to do a star jump

  • Stand with your legs together and arms down by your side.
  • Jump off of both feet and swing your arms above your head (make sure you can't hit anything!)
  • Land with your feet wider than your shoulders.
  • Jump again and land in the first position, legs together, arms down by your side.

Round 3 - Target toss

For this activity you'll need a ball or rolled-up pair of socks and a washing basket, bucket, or similar container, as well as a way to mark down scores (like pen and paper).

For this activity, try and throw the ball/rolled-up socks into the container as many times as you can in 10 attempts.

Here's how to play…

  • Place the container/washing basket in position (make sure there is nothing delicate around it!).
  • Measure out a distance from the container, depending on how difficult you want the challenge to be - the bigger the distance away, the harder it will be.
  • Mark down a point for every successful throw into the container.
  • If it's too easy, increase the distance!

Round 4 - Ball balance

For this activity you'll need a ball or rolled-up pair of socks, a pen and paper and a way of keeping time (this could be a stopwatch, phone, or a family member who can count to 60).

The aim of this activity is to balance a ball/rolled-up pair of socks on the end of your foot for as long as possible.

Here's how to play…

  • Stand with your feet together.
  • Hold your arms out to keep balance.
  • Lift one leg a few inches off the floor.
  • Place the ball or rolled up pair of socks on your foot (or get someone else to place it for you).
  • Try and keep it balanced there for as long as possible.
  • You get one point for every second the ball or socks stay on your foot.

Round 5 - Hand walkouts

For this activity you'll need a way of keeping time (this could be a stopwatch, phone, or a family member who can count to 60).

How many hand walkouts can you do in one minute?

Here's how to play…

  • Start in a standing position.
  • Put your hands on the ground in front of your toes.
  • Gradually walk your hands forward as far as you can stretch.
  • Then, slowly walk them back to your toes again.
  • Repeat - how many can you do in a minute?

If you're playing with your friends or family, remember to add up the total scores and announce the winner. You could even hand out medals at the end!
