For those fantasy adventure fans who are starved for decent storytelling. A whole lotta fun. I’ll be reading everything Brom has written to date starting now.

This was a good read. I also loved the setting. As a Pennsylvania resident, I know that these forests hold mystery, magic and adventure.

At first this novel about a movie production based on a novel based on an historic account of a haunted property seems like a tired exercise in popular culture and fame. However, when you peel back the layers of this meta masterpiece, you’ll find a cautionary tale about the erasure of queer women in a society that still to this day seeks to uphold these women in high regard while simultaneously punishing them for their brazenness. Totally worth the read.

I read this novel when it first came out. I was 12 years old living in western Pennsylvania and growing up in a staunchly Presbyterian family. At the time it opened my eyes to the subjects of gender dysmorphia, the sexual revolution and, thanks to my lack of sexual education, the seemingly wild fact of the existence of genetic hermaphrodites. Back then it didn’t take much to shock and surprise me. In the 20 years since, I’ve thought of this novel many times, especially as I’ve seen many of my friends undergo gender affirming surgeries and treatments. Although Cal’s character is genetically born male and raised female, which is not quite the same as being a transgender person experiencing gender dysmorphia, I believe that my reading of this novel at the tender age of 12 laid the groundwork for me to become a sympathetic soul to those experiencing the struggles of gender dysmorphism. It’s a must read for coming-of-agers. What a great book!

What’s more to want in a novel? There were some discrepancies between the two narrators; for example, certain names and places they said differently which brought me out of the story a bit. However, that’s splitting hairs, really. The story is so rich, the characters are so delightfully, how should I say it... amoral? murderous? What I’m trying to say is that V. E. Schwab really knows how to write a character with a difficult past. She knows the ways that trauma can twist and shape people into creatures who react before thinking and show faces of hatred instead of love to those who only seek to know them better. It’s brilliant. For fans of classic high fantasy who want to hear a refreshing new voice.

I was so glad to find this series. On par with my other favorite Australian fantasy author, Garth Nix. For serious high fantasy readers who like a plot with meat on it’s bones.
