In Honor of Lucien Ellington
May 23, 2024: We are saddened to hear that our dear friend, Lucien Ellington, has passed away. Lucien devoted decades to spearheading Education About Asia. His work and advocacy for education within the field of Asian Studies has impacted countless lives.
At the AAS 2024 Annual Conference, Lucien received the Distinguished Service to the Association for Asian Studies Award in recognition of his dedicated stewardship of Education About Asia, the Key Issues in Asian Studies book series, and other pedagogical initiatives. In his memory, we share the citation honoring Lucien:
In spring 1996, under the guidance of its founding editor, Lucien Ellington, AAS published the inaugural volume of the teaching journal, Education About Asia. In the twenty-eight years since, Lucien’s clear vision and wide-ranging knowledge of the educational landscape have ensured that Education About Asia remains a renowned and well-respected journal in the field of teaching about Asia. During his tenure, Lucien edited close to 2,000 feature articles, lesson plans, interviews, classroom resources, and book and film reviews, all of which are available to view and download from the AAS website.
In addition to his work with Education About Asia, Lucien has served as a presenter or consultant for more than one hundred teacher institutes on East Asia, economic education, and history education throughout the U.S. as well as co-directing thirteen study tours of East Asia for schoolteachers. He has been active in the AAS Southeast Conference and has been editor, since 2008, of the AAS classroom-focused book series, “Key Issues in Asian Studies.” This is all on top of his “day job” as UC Foundation Professor of Education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Director of the Asia Program and the Center for Reflective Citizenship.
It is with deepest appreciation for his decades-long service to AAS and tireless dedication to (in his own words) “enhancing student understanding of Asia and building bridges between colleges, universities, and schools,” that we present Lucien Ellington with the Award for Distinguished Service to the Association for Asian Studies.
Lucien’s family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to the Anglican Church of the Redeemer or the Chattanooga Food Bank.
