Conversations on sustainability, renewable energy, and other pressing issues: “A level of intellectual discussion all too absent in our national discourse.” —Booklist

A co-founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility, named one of the most influential women of the twentieth century by the Smithsonian Institute, Helen Caldicott presents a valuable collection of her interviews with prominent figures and environmentalists—in which she:

*Scrutinizes our unsustainable dependence on nuclear energy
*Explores how the United States could transition to renewable energy
*Raises awareness about issues such as deforestation and sea-level rise

Extending well beyond the scope of conventional environmental discussions, this book gives us Martin Sheen on grassroots movements and unionized labor; Chris Hedges on the costs of standing up for your morals; and award-winning actress Lily Tomlin on contemporary politics, in a sarcastic and witty exchange at once hilarious and inspiring—and also includes interviews with Maude Barlow, Bill McKibben, Jonathan Schell, Daniel Ellsberg, Lester Brown, Frances Fox Piven, Bob Herbert, and more.

“A treasure trove of anecdotes featuring high-profile politicians, academics, and celebrities . . . Surprising statistics about nuclear waste storage, rising sea levels, and military spending serve as an alarm, but Caldicott and her collaborators also offer many innovative solutions.” —

Product description

Review

"The book is a treasure trove of anecdotes featuring high-profile politicians, academics, and celebrities, including Martin Sheen, Lily Tomlin, Bob Herbert, and Lester Brown. . . .Alongside the celebrity sightings runs the thread of a growing urgency to change our energy, environmental, and military policies in the United States and on a global scale. Surprising statistics about nuclear waste storage, rising sea levels, and military spending serve as an alarm, but Caldicott and her collaborators also offer many innovative solutions."
--
Publishers Weekly

"Without fail, Caldicott asks thoughtful, deeply nuanced questions, and her subjects respond with intense and often personal reflections on many important issues. With a level of intellectual discussion all too absent in our national discourse, this is a worthy collection that educates with each turn of the page."

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener to the here-and-now

At first I thought this book would be boring as it is a collection of radio interviews. How wrong I was! This book should be required reading in every high school in America. The expert activists interviewed divulge facts about the history of the nuclear age and the hidden ramifications of historical disasters like Chernobyl. I read this book after reading The Unwinding and The Dilbit Disaster, and Loving This Planet followed these scholarly works perfectly. How ironic that my spell check picked up "dilbit" as an unknown (short for diluted bitumen). That's an indication in itself that American needs to inform itself at a deeper level, and along that line, Loving This Planet is easy to understand even for just a high-school grad like myself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Left wing opinions without facts
Reviewed in the United States on 10 September 2013
The first two chapters read opinions not based with facts. Doom and gloom opinions. One portending to global warming, then changing to climate change. Which is junk science. Then on into overpopulation in the next chapter. Helen's Youtube video conference gained my interest in this book, but these interviews make me believe Helen may be just another doom and gloomer. I'll finish the book, on the odd chance there are some facts I can actually use. At this point I would not recommend the book, and fear I'm just wasting time as most seem to do these days. Maybe she had to put these in for to get some useful information out, I'm shamefully hopeful everyone has good in them that gets out. I'll update this review after I've completed it. 17Sep2013, finished reading. Best Summary, left wing dribble, facts hardly even mentioned, words mindlessly thrown around unresolved in direction but
for aggrandizement the individuals mostly left wing junk science. 371 pages out of which there is a page of useful information, It would have been better if I'd looked it up on the internet myself!!! I do not recommend this book.
