It is becoming increasingly clear that Mr. Burns and company lost their way after 5 hours and 55 minutes of information and lesser known facts about the United States' role in the Holocaust. It was going so well and then Burns had to ruin it.

Here comes the political theater. How can Burns justify using the Holocaust to make a political statement about January 6th? And why did he use such a sensitive subject to push his own personal political views that have absolutely nothing to do with the historical facts of the Holocaust. It is insulting to Jews all over the world who died so brutally and also those survived the nightmares of World War II.

I thought this was the best portrayal of the holocaust, with its main strength its choice of witnesses, people who lived through the holocaust. They made several important points, first that every situation was inherently different and second that the issue of the holocaust is really a human issue, that we all need to confront. Most important, the film raises the question of why there may be holocaust deniers even today. Itt seems to me that the whole policy was so far off our personal morel radars and patently idiotic from many points of view, that it remains, to this day - hard for people to internalize despite the tremendous amount of documentation. Such may be all underlie the explanation of why U.S. and other governments acted as they did. Should they have done better? Of course they should, but that really is us talking and not the people of the time.

My only complaint about the film is that it seems to be a child of our times, looking for who can be blamed rather than why people behaved as they did.

While the content is difficult, the excellence of Ken Burns shines through and it is also well illustrated. The takeaway is (at that time) American sentiments were Anti-Semitism and Anti-Immigration. Not surprisingly, Congress reflected the same views--those of their constituents. One might say it was the Depression; they needed every job available and that is why they forbade allowing the persecuted Jews entry to America. However, it was not that--bills failed that ensured the persecuted Jews would come only if their sponsor provided for their care and they would have to return to Europe after the war.....This is a must-see documentary, although it may cause one to sour on the humanity of mankind......The Nazis killed 5 million people--just think about that number for a bit.....

This film evoked painful memories for me, as it clarified and illuminated the origin of many of the statements my father and relatives made while I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. I am disturbed by the fact that what some of the anti-Semites were quoted as saying echoed -- verbatim -- statements my father and grandfather and uncles made at the time. I am, for lack of a better term, retroactively horrified by the bigotry around which I was raised. Everyone needs to watch this film, though I daresay there will still be some who remain unconvinced. And for that, I mourn.

They did a good job of showing attitudes in the US before during and after the war towards Jews in general and as refugees, as well as how the US segregation laws guided Hitler. The juxtaposition with personal accounts supported the facts. The last few minutes showing examples of current attitudes is warranted.
