A MUST-SEE….!

…for Upstairs/Downstairs, Downton Abbey (based on U/D and better I think than DA), and British tv & film fans. Also if you love things about the turn of the 20th century, Titanic, WWI, Roaring Twenties, etc fans. It’s hard to put my finger on it but this two season series from the 1970s is my favorite show right now - and free trial or not, get BritBox to watch both seasons though the first is a bit better and though thought slower by some, the first few episodes are essential and I would have liked to have seen more focused on the initial plot and theme of Louisa’s tale. The core cast is awesome!

First season was a delight. But the writing for the 2nd season was a disaster. Louise Trotter became boorish and unlikeable. Many depressing episodes. I can see why it got cancelled.

One of the Best of BBC's Historical Dramas

The acting, writing, and all the details were spot on. Although Downton Abbey is a masterpiece of costume and sets, I found the Duchess's story, based on the life of Rosa Lewis, more compelling. Sorry to come to the end. Julian Fellowes, who created Downton Abbey, appears in one episode.

Known as the "Queen of Cooks", her culinary skills were highly prized by Edward VII, with whom she was rumoured to have had an affair in the 1890s.She was also called "The Duchess of Jermyn Street."

Compelling characters and period reproduction

The stories mostly delve, in varying degrees, to the elite upper class, indeed one of the main characters was born into peerage. But the accompanying backstories are that of the service class, which provides a gateway to the lower class. This series is excellent at displaying the interpersonal dynamics when these classes meet, and sometimes collide.

Some of the episodes, like Family Matters, end on dark notes, and the soundtrack somewhat belies the emotions of a very sad ending.

What a Wonderful Series

The only complaint that I have is that there are only 2 seasons. This period piece has it all. Great set design, wonderful period costumes, characters that stay true to their core, and awesome script writing. What more can be said? I was so excited to see the 2nd season was made available, because the first season was done so well. The 2nd season doesn't disappoint. Very sad and touching as well as fun. The writers didn't betray the era in order to make it fit with modern standards. That's what makes it so good.

I was old enough to view the original airing of both the 1st and 2nd seasons. I have always been a fan of Gemma Jones and any John Hawksworth productions. The food and its preparation was stunning and the characters well developed. I can view again and again. Thank you Amazon for finally making available the 2nd season. I waited 4 years.

OK, a prominent cook is forced into prostitution by the Prince of Whales.
Her choice, become the prince's tart or lose her job and the ability to get a job.
She has to marry someone for public appearance.
When he becomes King he has to call off the affair.
I think what they did wit the husband's character was lame.
She uses what the King/Prince gave her to buy a Hotel.
Guess what, the residents are sleazy women users.
I can't say this is not realistic. But the story line was geared to high school sex fantasy's.
I only finished the last episode to say I had watched it.

A marvelous glimpse of days gone by

I saw this series when it first appeared on PBS and was delighted to see it again. The piece is period correct and the characters, beautifully human, are a delight. The viewer is allowed to form opinions on every person's character by seeing all sides of them. Without spoiling the ending I will say I felt one relationship was contrived just to wrap things up. Other than that, it's superb.

I watched both seasons and enjoyed the first season the best. Season one introduced me to the characters and I watched them grow. The second season was a bit odd. I did not care for Lottie at all. It was better than average, not the worst. It is worth the watch.
