I usually like 70s movies like The Odessa File, Day of the Jackal, Chinatown and a host of others, but this film from 1980 (practically the 70s) is not one of the good ones. Not only is the plot too simplistic and absurd, but the supposedly-clever dialogue is not clever. It's painful to see Matthau and Jackson, two actors who were never attractive or sexy in my book, trying to seem like lovers. Yuck--I can't imagine it and don't want to. Everything about the film is equally substandard--the photography and direction are boring, the sites are not utilized to provide any interest, and the acting is stilted and unfunny. Don't think you are in for a fun romp or some kind of political thriller. This is neither.

What I haven’t told you is my friend was a kid who went to see the movie with his parents. I rented this on Amazon Prime not only was it not funny but the dialogue plot and acting were disappointing. Rent it would make a great gag gift idea. So bad it quacks fil malpractice there are b films but it does not rate a d.

We love Walter M but our entire family and friends were not entertained by this movie. I never thought I would not enjoy a Walter M movie but this is it. Stick to pure comedy. This was such a disappointment.

I don't understand this film.

On one level this is a story about a fed up CIA agent gone humorously rogue. On another level it's a film about a man who apparently has a lot of secrets to tell about Central Intelligence Operations that were either against the law, against ethics, or had some other negative effect upon society; American, Russian, and the world as a whole.

But we're never told about the material the main character wants to publish in a memoir.

We're just given this huge, and allegedly comical, film about an ex-CIA agent who wants out of the CIA, or so is strongly implied, so he can tell his stories.

I saw bits and pieces of it many years ago on HBO, thought it was marginally interesting, but in the end I really didn't understand the main character's motivations. Like a lot of Hollywood offerings, and to me it seems mostly regarding the "spy genre", you have to accept the character and story in order to go along with the ride the film is offering in order to be entertained. To me that's nonsense, and it's why I'm giving this thing 2-stars instead of three or more, and not "one star" (it's technically competent).

I rented this film thinking I would be able to piece together the larger story and character's motivation, but instead I'm more confused than I was when I first saw it on TV as a kid. It's sort of professionally glossy enough for a feature film, but there's so much information missing as to why people are doing what they're doing, that it's just a plain mess of a film.

Oh sure, Walter Matthau's character is clever, witty, even somewhat urbane, well trained and sophisticated, but he's still Walter Matthau. Maybe if they teamed him up with Jack Lemon again, then this film might have had some comical legs.

I don't know, I guess films like this remind me of film people and the perpetual bait and switch that's perpetually used by film people and law enforcement associated with the film industry. Put on a show, and hope people accept it. Well, as a viewer who thought he had missed something the first time around, gave the film a second chance on the hope that he would gleam new insight, I think I can safely say that I'm more angry and disappointed with this film than all those years in the 80s.

It's not worth the celluloid used to capture the images in the film. Skip it, unless you want to waste ninety minuets of your time, and a few dollars to stream the thing.

Matthau plays a CIA boss who, when taken off 'field work' and assigned to a desk job decides to expose all of the agency's dirty work in a tell-all book. Because the agency won't allow him to do dirty tricks any more. Predictably, the agency is after him trying to kill him which explains all the comedy that follows.

It's a good Matthau performance because he wasn't completely grumpy back in 1980 but he playe a terrible script.

The lesson we and our kids should learn from this movie is this: do seek to work for the government as a spook but, if your boss is not nice and kind to you then expose all the bad spook work. Not because it's wrong - after all, you'd been doing it - but because your boss was not kind to you.

Enjoy but, in my view, this movie sux. Big time.

I received this as a Christmas gift and was going to exchange it until I read the reviews and decided to watch it. Minor mistake. This movie made me smile a few times but that's about all. Everything is too predictable and the many of the characters are so clichéd and cartoonish that they aren't believable. I never felt drawn in and there wasn't any real tension to make the comedy work.
The alternate sound track that takes out the occasional swear word and the lack of violence or sex makes it a light movie that a family with small children could enjoy. Small children won't be bothered by the major plot flaws at the end.
I'm not sorry I saw it, but there's no reason to watch it again. If you want to see how good Walter Matthau can be in a movie of this type, get "Charlie Varrick". I wish that would come out in DVD. Now if I could figure out how to get "Hopscotch" back in the shrink wrap.
