I read the Kindle edition of this book. I haven't seen a print version, but I suspect that the Kindle format (specifically the lack of fonts and other typographical constructs) leads to confusion. It is also full of endnotes and references to other pages in the text, which are hyperlinked in the text.

Literature is not my strongest subject, so I'm not really sure how to say what I will try to say in this review.

This is not for the casual Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit fan. Taken from multiple drafts of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, Christopher Tolkien has attempted to show the progression of Beren and Luthien's love, and their story. Beren is a mortal and Luthien is immortal. Beren's race shifts from gnome to human in the different editions.

The book is novel length, but it is not a novel length story. There are multiple short story versions of the tale, along with thousands of lines of poetry. In between is a description of the history written by Christopher Tolkien.

If you enjoyed The Silmarillion, you will enjoy Beren and Luthien.
