Customer Review

I am leaving a very detailed review after having this mattress for nearly 5 years. I will list the pros/cons at the end. This was a budget purchase for my first real apartment. I was in my early 20s, single, didn’t want to spend a lot, but also didn’t want to sacrifice comfort. Now my partner and I can afford a higher quality mattress so we will be getting rid of this after about 5 years.

Delivery and set up: The mattress was delivered in a big long box, rolled up and covered in thick plastic wrap. The set up for this mattress was great. I unboxed it, waited around 12-24 hours for it to expand to 12 inches (I measured it so I didn’t have to sleep on an air mattress in my new place for longer than needed - I suggest doing the same), and then placed it on top of my bed frame. As the product description says, no boxspring needed. Slight smell but that’s to be expected, it was nothing terrible and wore off after a few days. Some fitted queen sheets struggle to fit over the last corner as I make the bed, but I’ve always been able to get them on. I’ve never had to buy deep pocket sheets.

The first 2.5 years: I weighed around 135lbs when this was purchased in 2017 and typically slept alone. I have always had some back and shoulder issues. I am a very hot, restless, and light sleeper. Basically, I’m terrible at sleeping. That said, this mattress was great for the first couple of years. My partner began living with me in January 2020 and it’s been our main mattress. We didn’t have complaints until mid-late 2020.

The last few years: By the end 2020 (3.25yrs after purchase) we noticed big differences. I do want to note that my partner and I spent a lot more time in bed in 2020 since we were at home for much of the year. We both put on pandemic weight, myself about 10-15 lbs and him more than that. I’m now around 150 and he’s around 245. We both prefer semi-firm mattresses and we both have back issues. I am a side and stomach sleeper, he is a back and side sleeper. We didn’t have many complaints until the mattress began to really soften up. I have l more issues than he does. Since late 2020 I cannot sleep comfortably on my stomach due to how soft the top layer of the mattress has become. My lower back will end up killing me due to lack of support. My arms and shoulders also fall asleep when I sleep on my side, which seems odd but apparently a too-soft mattress can do that. It’s hard for me to move my sleep position and I’m not a large human (I’m a pretty petite 5’4” female, despite some weight gain). The heat distribution has also become unbearable at times for both of us, so much that one of us will go sleep in the guest bed because it’s so hot. We keep the A/C on pretty low at night along with a fan and still have heat issues. You can also tell that no one sleeps in the middle of the bed because it is noticeably firmer in the center than the right and left sides. Sleep is important and if we didn’t have an extra guest mattress (which is an old springform with a pillow top), I’m not sure what we would have done the last couple of years. One positive though - the transfer of movement still isn’t bad after all this time. Even though we’re both flopping around with even greater force because the softened top layer makes it harder to move, the movement transfer is pretty low.

PROS:
- Easy delivery and set up
- Affordable
- Great support for all sleep positions if you weigh ~140lbs or less
- Low movement transfer
- Versatile - can put on almost any base
- Easy to move from room to room (not super heavy but need 2 people if moving further because it is thick and bulky)
- Usually cooling, but only if you sleep alone
- Stays medium-firm for the first few years
- Great edge support - even though we have other issues after 5 years, the edge isn’t bad

CONS:
- Quality does degrade over time (for us, it was noticeable after 3ish years, but maybe specific circumstances contributed)
- Not the best for hot sleepers, especially if you don’t sleep alone.
- When the top layer softens, heat transfer becomes much more apparent
- When the top layer softens, it offers very little support for stomach sleepers
- When the top layer softens, it can offer minimal support for side sleepers
- Zero bounce for intimate times - but that’s also to be expected from most foam mattresses
- If you weigh over 140lbs, you may notice a faster degradation

All in all, if you’re looking for a foam mattress within a budget, this is a great option. Just don’t expect it to suit all your needs for a very long time.

In case the item purchased isn’t listed above the review - this is for the Zinus 12 inch Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress in a queen size. I can’t recall what I paid for it but I’m sure it was a bit less than what it is now.
