“Two Can Play” follows Viola Bowen and Jesse Andrews, two video game designers from rival companies. When the chance of a lifetime to design a video game based on their all-time favorite book series arises, the two are sent on a wintery retreat in a remote mountain lodge to team-build. As the snow piles on, Viola discovers there’s more to her arch-nemesis than she knew, and heat builds in more ways than one.I feel like I need to start by saying that audiobooks are not usually my thing. I have a pretty difficult time preventing my mind from wandering without a page in front of me keeping me focused, which is why it is such a big deal to me that I loved this one as much as I did. Kelsey Navarro Foster’s narration and Hazelwood’s storytelling is a magical combination. Foster’s voice gripped me from the start, her different voices for each character keeping me engaged all the way through. When it comes to the story itself, it is short, steamy, and has a great plot! In typical Hazelwood fashion, the MMC is big and the FMC is little, and there is a misunderstanding that prevents them from getting together sooner. I did not mind it in the slightest and I think it was better this way because Hazelwood’s brand of writing kept me from getting lost when my attention drifted in that I knew what to anticipate. I could not get enough of the tension and mutual pining born from their miscommunication. Despite its brevity, “Two Can Play” felt like a complete story from start to finish with Hazelwood cleverly finding ways to incorporate flashbacks that further established Viola and Jesse’s history. The circumstances surrounding the retreat force them to confront each other and is what ultimately propels their relationship development. It should come as a surprise to no one that their chemistry is electric! The wintery setting creates a memorable backdrop for their budding romance. I hope this comes out in book form eventually so that I can add it to my collection!

Two Can Play is fast-paced, has a fun storyline, a pining, down-bad MMC, competing indie video game studios, horny characters, and a snowed-in work retreat (forced proximity!!!!) — what more could you ask for, honestly.

Ms. Hazelwood just knows how to write a guy who yearns and pines so pathetically AND I LOVE IT. I eat it up every single time and I can never get enough. Oh, and I LOVE a drunken confession😫. I truly love a guy who worships his woman and is in awe of her existence.

Two Can Play was hot and steamy, as Ali Hazelwood's books always are, which can sometimes translate weirdly on audio but the narrator did a great job for this one! Literally listened to it all in one go, it was so much fun. I haven’t read an Ali Hazelwood on audio before and it was a blast. I especially loved it for Viola’s internal monologue and ramblings.

This definitely left me wanting more though😭 Would not be mad to have a full-length story of Viola and Jesse’s relationship, and I’d love more video game-focused books in the future ngl. I want this in print ASAP so I can highlight and re-read my fave parts. I will 100% re-listen to this regularly.

Fits the normal Ali Hazelwood blueprint and for me this hits every time.

The book is about 2 video game makers who 'hate' each other. They met years back and she's liked him since the moment she first met him. However he rejects her. Why? Idk. Now they are forced to meet again and work together. She thinks he hates her, and he is actually obsessed with her. (In the car when her favorite song came on he turned off the radio) Stranger man. He's introverted, so I got annoyed at him at times

The book was decent except for the fact that he acts like he hates her, when it's the opposite. Like bro she likes you it's so obvious. It's cozy and warm vibes. The characters were OK, the only one I really liked was her friend. The book was shorter and I would love to get a physical copy of it.

The tropes: Misunderstanding, Friends to rivals to lovers.

(SPOILER) They get together in last couple of chapters (SPICY)!

This book was super cute and a short read. I love that they are both video game designers, especially that the FMC is. It’s cute, has some spice but nothing crazy, cute conversations and lots of swoon moments.

Two video game designers and their rival companies are forced to work together in order to design a high-profile video game that the two MCs have been dreaming about their whole lives based on their favorite book series. The two companies agree to a team building retreat in what seems like a futile attempt to create some peace. In the process, Viola and Jesse, lead designers from the rival companies, are unable to keep their feelings for one another hidden for too long.

Started off at about a 3 star read and felt like it was maybe too much of a YA tone for me (even though its not meant to be YA) but it grew on me and got 🔥🔥🔥.

I listened on audio and it was a very quick listen with an enjoyable narrator.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely loved this novella! Ali Hazelwood does it again with another quick, clever romance featuring a smart, sassy woman in STEM and a hefty dose of enemies-to-lovers tension. The video game elements were a fun touch, and I adored the Romeo and Juliet vibes with all the miscommunication and pining—classic Hazelwood style. The chemistry between the characters was undeniable, with the typical dynamic of a small, intelligent woman and a big, imposing man, which I can never get enough of.

As much as I enjoyed this, I really wish it had been a full-length novel. The story had so much potential, and I was so invested in the characters, but the novella format left me wanting more. It’s a quick read (perfect for a short getaway), but I definitely would have loved to see more of their journey. Hopefully, we get more from this world in the future!

As this is a Spotify exclusive, I really thought we gonna have a full cast production like The Honeymoon Crashers, but that's on me.

Viola wanted to design a game based on her favorite book but her co-lead is her arch-nemesis, Jesse. A retreat seems to be in order to have both teams mingle and work together.

This is your typical Ali Hazelwood book since they are all copy paste lol, and I got high hopes with this being a full production but it kinda fell flat. It's also a novella so we just dove right through the book and our main characters already got history together.

It's really short, sweet and spicy. There's little to no conflict since they are in a retreat and in their own little bubble. I cringed in some part, and need to stop whatever I was doing because ya girl got so shookt.

Please please use headphones because it's spicy.

I realized that I don't like listening to spice because I don't have any poker face when it comes to this.

It was okay, not the best Ali Hazelwood novel.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨3.5

I’m not typically drawn to romance novels, but I do love Ali Hazelwood—especially for her support in representing women in STEM. When I saw that Two Can Play had a gaming theme, I was excited to pick it up, though I was hoping for a bit more of the nerdy gaming vibe that was promised.

Overall, I thought the book was cute. The main characters were likable, and their dynamic was fun to follow, but I was a little disappointed that the gaming aspect didn’t play as big a role as I hoped. As a gamer, I always expect gaming to be a stronger theme when it’s advertised, and this one felt a bit light in that area. Still, the idea of creating a game based on a book was really cool, and I’d love to read the book they were working on and play the game—it sounded amazing!

The pacing was quick, and the typical miscommunication conflict did make me roll my eyes a bit, but that’s pretty standard for this genre. All in all, it was an enjoyable read, just not quite the gaming deep dive I was hoping for.
