Nine Tailed (Realm of Four Kingdoms Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 2,825 ratings

An enemy on her tails, an innocent at her side, and a dangerous power within her that could destroy them all. Jayci Lee melds Korean folklore with modern Americana in this fiery new series.

Sunny Cho aspires to be the dullest, least interesting person in any given room, which can be challenging for a nine-tailed fox spirit. So she drifts from city to city—staying clear of any and all attachment—and keeps her fox buried deep inside her. It is better this way. She would rather live as half of herself than risk losing control of her terrible powers.

Ethan Lee, a friend she left behind eight years ago, is a brilliant and distractingly hot PI. When he tracks her down and asks her to help him find his brother’s murderer, Sunny knows her uneventful life is about to be turned upside down.

Traversing the mortal realm and the world of gods, Sunny and Ethan discover their quest is much more dire than mere vengeance, and their friendship might be…more. An ancient evil is stirring, and Sunny is faced with an impossible choice: save the worlds from annihilation or claim the love fated by the heavens.

UNLEASH THE FOX WITHIN

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Urban-fantasy readers will adore the smart-mouthed, sword-wielding fox spirit at the heart of this fast-paced tale full of magic, secrets, and romance.” Booklist, Starred Review

“An absolute thrill ride! Nine Tailed is brimming with action, humor, and smoldering tension. Lee spins a fantastically original tale filled with cool magic and swoony romance you don’t want to miss.” —Juliette Cross, bestselling author of the Stay a Spell series

“Fast paced, heartwarming, and heartbreaking—my new fave fantasy romance! Supernatural meets K-drama vibes, immigrant globe-trotting immortals, and an epic battle between destiny and fate. Nine Tailed stole my heart with an explosion of fireworks and a wonderfully compelling gumiho. A stellar start to what promises to be a swoon-worthy series. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one!” —A. Y. Chao, the Sunday Times bestselling author of Shanghai Immortal

“Jayci Lee has gifted us with the best kind of romantasy—a wild ride with a sexy, protective hero, spunky protagonist, a fast-paced plot sprinkled with the perfect amount of sexual tension, and world building so layered and rich you can sink your teeth into it!” —#1 New York Times bestselling author Lexi Ryan

“Jayci Lee’s Nine Tailed gives Janet-Evanovich-meets-Buffy vibes in a vibrant fantasy setting full of Korean mythology. If you’re in the mood for some spicy, magical fun, this is the book for you.” —Megan Bannen, author of The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy

Nine Tailed is a wild, scorching, compulsively readable romantasy that delivers it all—characters who leap off the pages, fast-paced adventure, romance with all the feels, and a fascinating, magical world to die for. You won’t be able to put it down!” —Abigail Owen, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Games Gods Play

“I have been dying for a Korean-inspired romantasy, and Jayci Lee has come through! Nine Tailed is a sexy, fantastical adventure that reminds me of mythical stories of my youth, while fulfilling the romance-loving heart of my adulthood. Finally a kickass Korean heroine who feels familiar and who has me fist-pumping ‘Yes!’ as she tackles the darkness that chases her all while fighting for her HEA. Sunny and Ethan are my new OTP, and I demand a K-drama adaption starring Go Youn-jung and Rowoon immediately!” —Susan Lee, author of Seoulmates

From the Publisher

If I were to create my own summer reading list to share with the world, Nine Tailed would, without question, take the No. 1 spot. But in lieu of that, I can give you my top three reasons why I highly recommend spending some of your summer with Sunny and Ethan in Jayci Lee’s epic romantasy, Nine Tailed:

  1. Though she’s a hundred-year old fox spirit, I have never wanted a literary character as a best friend more in my life. Our heroine, Sunny, comes to life on the page in such a vibrant way that I feel like in addition to following her story in the book, there’s a chance she might magically text me with the offer of an impromptu adventure. (Of course, I would immediately accept.)
  2. Nine Tailed got me completely interested in learning more about Korean folklore. Jayci Lee draws heavily on this influence, and Nine Tailed offers a modern take, featuring a contemporary Korean-American heroine straddling her identity of being both Korean and American—not to mention that she’s also part human and part fox spirit.
  3. For a romance editor, nothing says summer more than some steam! Fireworks have nothing on the sparks flying between Sunny and Ethan. They are a new OTP for me, and I can’t wait for you to swoon over them!

TL;DR?
Nine Tailed is everything I’m looking for in a summer read. Enjoy the adventure!

Nine Tailed was a fresh take on the romantasy genre focusing on Korean folklore. I really loved this aspect of the story. I’m also a huge fan of found family, which I felt that Lee did well with the cast of characters she ended up surrounding Sunny and Ethan with; however, I wish we had more time with these other characters. They brought in a nice balance to the awkward insta love that Sunny and Ethan were struggling with. I felt like the world building in the other realms was well developed and loved being able to move throughout the world and realms. Additionally, the magic systems were unique (to me) and well explained. While I enjoyed both main characters, Sunny and Ethan, as individual characters, I struggled with them together. As someone who doesn’t love instalove/lust, there wasn’t enough relationship building for me. While they knew each other when they were younger, we missed out on that development and are going off what we’re told rather than shown/experienced between the characters. The plot itself moved along well and was interspersed with enough assassin battles and secret revelations to keep me interested. Overall, while I had some challenges with the story, I enjoyed it overall and plan to continue with the next book in the series.

I also enjoyed the flash back chapters, it helped to explain certain parts of the story without over explaining or over complicating the story line. The story does use the f-word a few times and there is a bit of a steamy scene. Just fyi for those looking for a clean read.

This was such a fun book! I am happy to report that the beautiful glory of the cover DOES translate to the wonder of this book.

This is a story about a sassy, snarky fox spirit who gets swept up in a fight for her life and the lives of those she cares about, dare I even say, her friends. The author does a great job of portraying a strong, intelligent FMC without sacrificing some twists.

There is some spice to this book! I think the author did a great job balancing it being steamy but also tasteful. I did quirk an eyebrow at one scene, but so did the characters at nearly the same time, which made me laugh.

While this tale is far from over, it also doesn't end on a cliffhanger that will have you pulling your hair out in frustration.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next one. It made me laugh, was paced well with plenty of action, and even threatened to make me tear up a bit.

And author, if you see this review, PLEASE bless us readers with a glorious collectors edition of this already beautiful book!

Nine Tailed was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I really appreciated the inclusion of Korean folklore, which isn't commonly seen in the romantasy genre and added an intriguing element to the story. The mythological aspects were fascinating, and I enjoyed learning about gumiho legends. However, the story itself fell flat in many areas. The romance between Sunny and Ethan felt forced and rushed, making it hard to connect with their relationship.

The pacing was also uneven, with certain parts dragging while others felt rushed. By the end, it felt like too much was happening all at once, without enough time to fully develop the new characters and plot twists.

Overall, Nine Tailed has an interesting premise with the folklore elements, but the story felt messy and confusing throughout most of the book. If you're into Korean mythology, it might still be worth checking out, but don't expect too much from the romance or pacing.

I really enjoyed this book. Other reviews indicated this will be the first book of a new series and I really hope so. I thought the characters were developed well and the quick chapters that take you back in history are a great way to explain what happened in the past to lead us to where we find ourselves in the story. I really love that the men in the story are real men who cherish and desire to protect the women around them even though they are strong themselves. I really want to read more about Sunny and Ethan and their whole team.

Really fun story.

I am obsessed with Nine Tailed. I read it with my eyes and once the audio came out I reread it. The narrators are fantastic ratcheting the suspense in the book up even higher. I loved that the story was completely unique and fully thought out.

This nine tailed dragon, Sunny has spent her life being boring hoping to keep her powers hidden. When she can no longer hide, she reluctantly journeys to her homeland to save the world. She meets old and new friends that will expand her world and hopefully together they will have a chance at saving it.

A contemporary romance mixed with Korean folklore made for a wonderful story that I didn't try to guess what happened next. Rather I was along for the magical ride. The prose was beautiful and I found myself highlighting many passages.

Don't sleep on this one. It has the makings of an obsessed fandom.

This was captivating and fun to read. I want to see it in film because the descriptions were so vivid! There were some parts near the end that made my eyes roll but it was all in good fun and makes sense for a YA romantasy.

I loved learning about Korean mythos and look forward to the rest!

I love it! Beautifully written, the world building is magical and really drew me in right from the start even as the book is a little slow to begin. I love Sunny, she's prickly but so easy to love and her sense of humor, her sarcasm just made me like her more. And I like the other characters too, I really want more of this story!

3.0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Korean Folklore
Reviewed in Australia on August 20, 2024
Nine Tailed follows protagonist Sunny; a 130 year old Gumiho (a Nine Tailed Fox) who has been successfully suppressing her magic and living amongst humans in America. That is, until her disguise is dismantled when the brother of her friend Ethan is found murdered.

Quickly, it becomes evident that the murder has been undertaken by someone not belonging to the world of mortals, resulting in an adventure of life and death into the four kingdoms of Korean gods and immortals.

Being new to Korean folklore, I really enjoyed the introduction to the ancient stories, mythology, magical creatures, and gods. And while the story arc often had me wondering where this story was going, I did enjoy the journey and cast of characters introduced along the way.

What I did struggle with was the romance element of the story. I will be honest, I'm not a fan of push-pull type romances in general, but I tend to think that a 130 year old "being" would be a little more emotionally mature than the woman we find in this story. Besides a racy sex scene, which gained a few eye rolls from myself, I felt like I was inside the head of a young teen. Ignoring this element of the story, this was an enjoyable read.

This book would be suited to readers of fantasy romance and people who enjoyed the Twilight series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical story

This book took awhile to get into. The writing was not as polished as it could've been from the start. With that being said I did love the story. I love the little twists and turns and the magic of it all. The book is really slow going so don't be expecting huge things right away. The author takes her time in setting the scene and introducing the characters. I'm not a big fan of that, I obviously like to be engaged from the get go, but I think there is going to be so much more to this series that I am going to accept the speed for the greater good.
It's been awhile since I've read a single POV book and I must say it is not my preference. I much prefer the dual POV and especially in this story. I am a big fan of Ethan and I would've loved to experience the story through him as well as Sunny. Maybe that'll change in the next book.
As for our MCs, Ethan & Sunny, I was a bit skeptical at first but I think with the slow story building and the Korean mythology learning it didn't really allow me to experience them fully. But once the story kind of evened out and we were making our way I was able to form a better opinion of them and I really like them. Looking forward to seeing how they grow and evolve in the next book.
This book is quite fantastical and I absolutely love the Korean folklore it's a refreshing change from other more typical folk tales and mythology. Sunny being a Gumiho, a nine tailed fox spirit, just the picture of that in my head is pure beauty. I love it.
If you can get through the first bit of the book I think you'll really enjoy it and I definitely recommend. 3.5 STARS

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting introduction to Korean folklore blended with modern-day storytelling
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 18, 2024
I purchased this book in the hope of learning about another culture's folklore. This book did not disappoint. A good introduction but blended nicely with modern-day settings; a battle across the ages. Thoroughly enjoyed it to the point I couldn't put it down. That said, it was let down by three things:

Firstly, the charachter attributes - as other readers have found, the main charachter has been alive for over 100 years (albeit living in a young body) but has a very teenage-girl attitude to life/love/behaviour - that is her charachter rather than an act to match her portrayed body-age.

Secondly, and in a way linked to the first, the writing does let the book down. Repeated sentences, repeated descriptions and not enough depth. Some readers have found this too annoying to be able to continue. For me, it did not deter me enough to stop reading and I focused instead on the story which I loved.

Thirdly, and perhaps the worst of all, was the ending. It just stopped. To the point I thought I was missing another chapter. I have read books were you know you are reaching the end of the story, and are preparing for the story to continue into another book. This ending feels like it was cut off. The fact that this book was only published this month, I have to wait for the next book and I am not sure if I will be bothered to read it when it comes out. If you are ending a book in this way, make sure your next installment is already available to purchase.
