In Any Lifetime: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 226 ratings

A devoted husband defies fate and risks everything to find the one universe where his beloved wife is still alive in this bold and thought-provoking novel.

Dr. Jonas Cullen has spent his career as a groundbreaking physicist defying the odds. But on the best night of his life—the night his wife, Amanda, tells him they’re finally having a baby—everything is taken away when a tragic car accident claims the lives of Amanda and their unborn child.

Gutted by pain, Jonas sets out to find a way to bring back Amanda—or rather, find a parallel universe in which she’s still alive. But that’s easier said than done. As Jonas comes to understand all too well, the universe favors certain outcomes…and Amanda’s death is one of them.

Guggenheim’s novel takes readers on a suspenseful journey, intercutting scenes of Jonas’s frantic, present-day search across multiple realities with glimpses from the past of his unfolding romance and eventual marriage. Will Jonas and Amanda reunite in some other world, or will fate succeed in taking her from him forever?

From the Publisher

Some go to the ends of the earth for love, but one man will go to the ends of the universe. In Any Lifetime is what would happen if Michael Crichton had written The Time Traveler’s Wife.

When Jonas, a physicist, loses his pregnant wife, Amanda, he puts what had been only theories—until now—into practice, and sets off to find a universe where she is still alive. The odds are against him, because the universe actually seems to believe in destiny, which means there is only one universe out of billions where Amanda still lives. Now, Jonas has to fight not only against fate, but also against alternate versions of himself
and the doubts in his own heart to find out whether it’s possible to love someone too much.

I could not read this fast enough, eager to experience Guggenheim’s just-slightly-different versions of our world, and found myself screaming in frustration along with Jonas when he discovered yet another world where Amanda didn’t exist, then crying happy tears while reliving their love story. I hope all versions of
you enjoy this spellbinding book that proves that the laws of physics are no match for love.

Parallel universe and romance plots usually seem to me at least somewhat similar to others I've read, and neither is a favorite. But I picked this First Reads as a flyer out of what seemed a meager array of choices for me, especially in a month I can choose two. Now, because I felt entertained, as well as educated - mostly from pausing to look up things (mainly concepts and places) - and because I much enjoyed the quick, fun read, I'm happily calling this a five.

Should be titled In Any Universe.

At times, this book was almost too science, and very close to being science fiction, which I don't like. However, there is enough story in the midst of it all to make it worth finishing. I read this book in under 24 hours. I had to get to the end, had to see if there would be a reunification. You will, too.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in awhile. The story was well written and a pleasure to read. But it also left me thinking. The main characters were obsessed: one with a ‘good’ reason, and one with a ‘bad’ reason. But is obsession ever good?

BAD: The methodology of traveling between realities doesn't make sense even in the realm of quantum physics - and so is purposely vague. There is no evidence or theory that the multiverse is limited in any manner. It is infinite and therefore there are infinite possibilities. For the author to wish it differently just to drive the plot in a certain way is a cop out. There are way too many convenient coincidences in the story - again, a contrived approach to the plot.

GOOD: The love story is interesting, as is the nemesis of Victor.

Sci fi with a love (obsession?) story. Somewhat repetitive but also intriguing. Enjoyed the multiple concepts to wrap your head around.

I love a good time travel story and this one does not disappoint! Hard to put down. I keep being drawn into the story - hoping for a sequel

. Super light read the plot repeats itself which is helpful if you expect to be interrupted a lot or can only read a little bit at a time. Also, no character development so you don't have to worry about getting to know them. The Multiverse is in interesting premise so that that is another nice thing about it

Would be a great manga or comic book type read with lots of angry kapow! Zowee! moves and crying love scenes (picture giant eyeball with trembling tear )

You can open any page and not be lost

The Cat's Mother
4.0 out of 5 stars Nobel prize winning doctor travels between universes like Doctor Who - but without a tardis
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 6, 2024
Well this was something different, although I can't pretend to understand all the mumbo jumbo about quantum physics and slipping from one universe to another (I don't understand Doctor Who half the time either). Jonas embarks on an epic journey, travelling between infinite parallel universes, meeting people who are aleady dead in his own world, all with the hope of reuniting with his beloved wife after they were involved in a tragic road accident two years ago. It sounds a bit like fantasy science fiction nonsense, but it's written in a way that makes you wonder if it could be possible. The book skips backwards and forwards in time so you get an idea of how Jonas and Amanda came together and the depth of their relationship. If you skip over the technical scientific bits, and suspend disbelief sometimes (in particular the ease and lightning speed he manages to get a credit card and passport in a world where he's been dead for two years), it's a beautiful story. I read it quite quickly as I had to find out if Jonas and Amanda were reunited in another universe somewhere. But I won't give anything away!

I raced through this book as it is one of those stories of which you are desperate to reach the conclusion. I like Time Travel/Multiverse stories and although there is alot of science involved, the reader can gloss over that and still keep up with the plot. The author's background in comic books, film and TV writing really show and I can easily imagine watching this, though the CGI costs would be epic! Jonas and Amanda's love story is at the heart of the story and appealed to my romantic side. It reminded me of The Frequency of Us by Keith Stuart, a favourite of mine, but with added Jack Reacher-esque fight scenes and baddies Macon and Victor following him through the various universes. A thrilling, rollercoaster of a book.
