In Any Lifetime: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 4,966 ratings

A devoted husband defies fate and risks everything to find the one universe where his beloved wife is still alive in this bold and thought-provoking novel.

Dr. Jonas Cullen has spent his career as a groundbreaking physicist defying the odds. But on the best night of his life—the night his wife, Amanda, tells him they’re finally having a baby—everything is taken away when a tragic car accident claims the lives of Amanda and their unborn child.

Gutted by pain, Jonas sets out to find a way to bring back Amanda—or rather, find a parallel universe in which she’s still alive. But that’s easier said than done. As Jonas comes to understand all too well, the universe favors certain outcomes…and Amanda’s death is one of them.

Guggenheim’s novel takes readers on a suspenseful journey, intercutting scenes of Jonas’s frantic, present-day search across multiple realities with glimpses from the past of his unfolding romance and eventual marriage. Will Jonas and Amanda reunite in some other world, or will fate succeed in taking her from him forever?

From the Publisher

Some go to the ends of the earth for love, but one man will go to the ends of the universe. In Any Lifetime is what would happen if Michael Crichton had written The Time Traveler’s Wife.

When Jonas, a physicist, loses his pregnant wife, Amanda, he puts what had been only theories—until now—into practice, and sets off to find a universe where she is still alive. The odds are against him, because the universe actually seems to believe in destiny, which means there is only one universe out of billions where Amanda still lives. Now, Jonas has to fight not only against fate, but also against alternate versions of himself
and the doubts in his own heart to find out whether it’s possible to love someone too much.

I could not read this fast enough, eager to experience Guggenheim’s just-slightly-different versions of our world, and found myself screaming in frustration along with Jonas when he discovered yet another world where Amanda didn’t exist, then crying happy tears while reliving their love story. I hope all versions of
you enjoy this spellbinding book that proves that the laws of physics are no match for love.

I must confess, I have a penchant for Time Travel novels. Most of them are not very good. I am happy to report, however, this one IS good. Well written, interesting premise, with lots of thrills and action. Naturally, you have to suspend your disbelief. But aside from the villain in this story, the characters are both likable and have depth. It’s a fast read and a worthwhile one with just the right amount of “science” to both confuse and amuse the reader.

Interesting premise, but some sections are just too long and detailed (being told exactly what people are thinking), while others (towards the end) haves days pass in mere paragraphs.

I personally got frustrated with each flashback as it slowed down the story. The characters are well fleshed out albeit the villain is predictable. This book is more action and romance than science fiction. The science fiction elements are simply to move the story forward.

As someone who loves hard science fiction, I could see a lot of scientific issues that I ignored while reading this book -- a vertical particle accelerator in an earthquake zone?!

The action scenes were surprisingly well written and I could easily understand the fight scenes -- an area where most writers do poorly but not here.

The ending was both good and bad. The good (an expected ending turns out to have many unexpected twists and turns) and the bad (too many unexplained dead bodies that NYPD just seems to ignore).

A minor quibble: the title is so generic that I can never remember it.

Ultimately the book could have been improved, lots of the redundancy removed, but still a good book that is not too deep and fun to read.

Science fiction (or the world’s next reality?) at its finest - breathtaking suspense almost nonstop that it’s hard to stop reading! Parallel universes (rather called multiverses) are the backdrop of a love story that refuses to die, even when fate rears its nasty head. The only drawback is that the story finally ends (and rather abruptly and maybe a little too neatly with the last sentence), but I highly recommend this book for its wonder and possibilities (if you are willing to believe).

I really enjoyed this book! I was instantly gravitated to the parallel universe/multiverse theme and throw in a little romance I was sold.

But this book was more than that. It’s not merely a romance book! Haha, I was no expecting the violence but it really made me feel like I was watching a good action movie in my head. Kept me on my toes, I had no idea how it would end, and I was genuinely happy at the ending. I love that this book made it super simple to grasp the concept and didn’t go too far into physics jargon that would have confused the heck out of me.

Things I did not love…the repetition of specific words or phrases used multiple times throughout, long ish chapters, and towards the end got a little tired of the same scene playing over and over.

This one was a bit of a slow start and a drawn out end for me. I enjoyed the pacing of the middle 50% and enjoyed the story as a whole. I'm a sucker for a good alternate universe traveling book so I did enjoy this, but I wish it focused more on what could happen, rather than focus so much on the (I assume) made up science behind how it worked. I don't think that level of detail was necessary to enjoy the story and, indeed, I think it actually detracted from it.
I will also add that I enjoyed the book a lot more once I added the audible narration. I think it added a lot to the story.

I really wasn't expecting anything awesome, because, to be honest, I don't believe in a multiverse. I don't WANT to believe in a multiverse.

But Mr. Guggenheim has managed to make it sound at least plausible, and his characterizations of Jonas, Amanda, Victor, and Eva are done very well.

I did notice that he tied things up nicely in a bow at the end, but I'm still pretty saddened by how poorly Eva was treated overall.

But, then again, it's a multiverse...it's going to be even more unfair than a singular reality.

I DO take exception to one thing, which is why I only gave it four stars. The author, through Victor, keeps insisting that the Universe does not want Jason and Amanda together. Why not? Isn't the multiverse big enough for a singular happy ending? Or are all of the opposing machinations a factor of Victor's countermanipulation? And, in all of the multiverses, wouldn't there be one where Jonas and Victor worked together?

But it was a good yarn. The ending is satisfactory. There's nothing wrong with "happily ever after".

A complicated well told story of a scientist's quest to find his wife in another universe. Really unusual book but it's one of the best I've read for some time. It really does keep you guessing until the end. Heroes and villains, a great fantasy!

This was one of my two Amazon First Reads for July. I am so glad I chose it.

Doctor Jonas Cullen had developed a theory that there are multi universes. When he and his wife Amanda have a car accident and she is killed, he is determined to find her in one of the other universes.

Jonas sets out to find a parallel universe where Amanda is still alive. However, things do no always work out for him.

The story is fast paced, with trauma, love, hate, friends and enemies.

This is an interesting story and I loved it.
