Built to Last Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

"I loved this delightful romance about makeovers of old homes, old personas, and relationships that never had a chance to launch. A sweet, charming reminder of what you can build with a strong foundation." - Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Two Ways

Erin Hahn's Built to Last is a sparkling second chance romance about owning what you’re worth and fighting for the one who got away.

Shelby Springfield has spent the last ten years trying to overcome her past, sanding it away like she does the rough spots on the vintage furniture finds she makes over. But as a former child star, it’s hard to forget a mediocre pop career, a meltdown widely documented by the paparazzi, and a huge public break with her former co-star Lyle Jessup. It’s also hard to forget her other co-star and childhood sweetheart, Cameron Riggs—the one who got away.

Anytime Shelby has called, Cameron has come running… And then he runs right off again to chase stories around the world by making documentaries, too scared to admit what he really wants. But when Lyle stirs the pot, getting the two back in the spotlight with a home renovation show, Cameron can't help but come on board.

There's something in it for everyone—almost. Cameron wants to come home and set down some roots. Shelby wants to prove to the world she's not the messy party girl anymore. And Lyle wants to twist the screws on his two childhood friends who had more chemistry than he could dream of with anyone. Sparks and sawdust fly as Shelby and Cameron film the pilot for "Homemade" and battle Lyle’s shenanigans at every turn.

Intense pining!
Built to Last by Erin Hahn is a stand-alone second chance romance that centers on Shelby Springfield, a former child star that started a new life rebuilding furniture and homes. And Cameron Riggs, also a former child star from the same show as Shelby, a NatGeo journalist. It’s been ten years since they went their separate ways, and they once again find themselves doing a show together with their other old co-star (and Shelby’s ex), Lyle Jessup, as the producer. As the show starts filming, the two characters start reliving and moving on from their past lives. This book is lovely and thoughtful. I love Shelby and enjoy reading how she made a whole new life out of her former toxic celebrity life. You get the sense of her pride and pleasure over her newfound talent and profession. I also adore Cameron, who is such a good-natured guy, and his profound commitment to doing his projects, even temporary ones, with utmost care. I was worried his character would be one-dimensional, but thankfully isn’t.This is a slow-burn book with agonizing pining from both characters. Given what they went through in their lives separately and together, I find this book's “will they, or won’t they?” aspect reasonable. I really like the progression of their individual growth in this book outside of their romance, and I’m pleased with how it ended.

It’s not “sweet” in the closed door, cloying way, but rather more of a heart-warmingly real way. I love he falls first/he pines for years, and Cam has that under wraps. Shelby’s BFFs Maren and Lorelai are the ultimate badass supporters of the real her, and we love to see it. (We see more from Lorelai in my other recent favorite from Erin Hahn Friends Don't Fall in Love.) Shelby’s dad’s love for Cam, including stepping in to give him fatherly advice and fill that void, tugged at my heart strings. I could have used a little more spice if possible? A few scenes were more implied than frankly spice. The writing had a light, bubbly quality that I really enjoyed! Definitely will be reading more from Erin Hahn, I frankly can’t wait for Maren’s story!

A great contemporary romance by Erin Hahn. I originally came across Erin's YA romance books and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Hearing about this book I was intrigued. Erin did just as amazing with her adult romance as she has done with her YA books. Shelby Springfield and Cameron Riggs were co-stars growing up on television with great on and off-screen chemistry. Cameron made a decision to leave the show and go on to college, so they have been apart for about ten years with their paths only crossing once when Shelby and her other co-star, Lyle break up after five years together and she contacts Cameron to help with her broken heart. Instead of taking advantage of the situation, Cameron removes himself but leaves her a letter giving her advice on how to pick up the pieces. Now five years after that encounter Lyle wants the two of them back together on screen for a home renovation show. Shelby and her Dad have become very successful at renovating houses and flipping them with Shelby also restoring furniture, but her Dad doesn't make a good onscreen personality. That's where Cameron comes in. He puts his Nat Geo career on hold to learn from Shelby's Dad and work with her to renovate and flip a house for the pilot. Lyle though throws lots of wrenches into the mix to stir up drama. Will Cameron and Shelby successfully flip the house and land the show? Will Lyle destroy this show that he says he wants them for? Will Cameron and Shelby be able to patch the rift between them?

I thought the synopsis for this book was cute: second chance romance, and a home renovation show. Here’s what I thought:

+ Second chance romances aren’t my favorite trope but this one is cute and the chemistry between Shelby and Cam is there and has been there since they were kids and tv stars on a show together. Ever since then it’s been rough for both of them but they find their way back together. The best thing about second chance romances is the history the two characters have with one another – which I feel make their bond stronger. I thought the romance between them was well done.

+ I love a rom-com with a good supporting cast and Shelby’s friends in this book are some fun characters. There is one in particular I’m wondering about – is she going to have her own story? Seems like the ending was hinting to that.

+ I don’t watch a lot of home improvement shows anymore but even I know the popularity of them, especially Chip and Joanna Gaines. I barely watched their show but I remember them blowing up and now they have a magazine, merch…an empire! I love that Shelby’s passion got her out of the Hollywood life and back into Cam’s arms. Same for Cam – seems like he was jumping around doing lots of things before realizing he just wanted to be where Shelby is.

~ It took me awhile to connect to Shelby and Cam only because there was a bunch of drama in their past involving their ex-costar and Shelby’s ex-boyfriend Lyle, who is such a jerk. Lots of things seemed to come in between Shelby and Cam – and they hold back a lot until Shelby decides not to.

~ Lyle – why did he have to be there? Why did they have to do a show with him as their “boss” so to speak? I would have said no. 😅 He’s such a drama starter.

Tropes: second chance romance, friends to lovers, childhood stars finding their way

    Spice Level: 🌶🌶🌶

    Why you should read it:
*a home renovation, second chance romance with a fun cast of characters (minus Lyle)
*if you like HGTV and all the home improvement/home reno shows, you’ll like this one
*Shelby and Cameron have a sweet romance

Why you might not want to read it:
*a bit of a slow start and too much drama with Lyle – I wish they just didn’t do business with him

    My Thoughts:

This one was cute and you will adore it if you like the second chance romance trope. These two have always been into one another so there isn’t really anything stopping them from being together this time except for themselves. Lyle and Marcella got on my nerves but the rest of the characters were fun. Shelby and Cam have a sweet happy ever after and the ending is left open for one of Shelby’s friends.

I adore this author’s YA books. When she announced she was writing an adult fiction with spice and a home improvement premise I was sold. Once again, I fell in love with the way this author writes her characters and dialogue! Shelby and Cam were compelling and easy to root for. I loved Shelby’s fire and grit and talent. I found Cam’s protectiveness cute. Their journey towards each other was so sweet. The moments of self discovery and growth sprinkled in made the story feel all the more real! The secondary characters felt real and relatable as well and added heart and depth to the story! The plot was paced well and had me invested in the story from the beginning. The jumping between Her and His POVs worked well for this story. It was great to see both sides of the story come together! I loved how the setting felt like it’s own character, and how Shelby and Cam felt so apart of it by the end. The home renovation/tv show aspect felt unique and fresh. The song titles at the start of the chapter were a fun touch. The spicy scenes were perfection for me. The ending fit the story and the characters so well. I can’t wait to read Lorelei’s story!

I was lucky enough to recently read catch and keep. Immediately I needed to back track because it was obvious I was missing something fabulous. And man was I! I absolutely loved Shelby and Cameron. I bought the audio book- couldn’t get through it fast enough and then had to buy it so I could devour it the way it was obviously meant to be. Highly recommend!
