The Best Worst Christmas: An Audible Original Novella Audible Audiobook – Original recording
Lily is back from Australia for the first time in seven years to spend Christmas at her mum’s house in a small, gossipy English village. To her surprise, she returns to find that her mother is dating the man next door, who also happens to be the father of her ex-boyfriend Tom. Tom, who broke Lily’s heart all those years ago. Tom, the real reason Lily fled to the other side of the world and stayed there. Tom, who is also home for Christmas and right there, next door.
In what is shaping up to be the worst Christmas ever, somehow Lily and Tom have to try to get along and play happy families, but living with the man who she is clearly not over is proving to be difficult, and tensions are high. Add in some drunken caroling, a reindeer bite, a potent Christmas pudding and some meddling parents and Lily’s trip home will turn her entire life upside down.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024This is one of those stories that if you don’t immediately recognize the “trick” that will be revealed at the end, then you aren’t trying. Lily comes home to England for Christmas for the first time since she broke up with her boyfriend years ago only to discover that her mother and her boyfriend’s father are shacking up and have moved in with each other. Her mother tells her that she will have to spend the holidays at her boyfriend’s house—you know, with Lily’s ex-boyfriend. Now, either these are the two most callous parents in existence or they are up to some Christmas mischief trying to get their children back together.
Honestly, I think they are lucky that Lily didn’t turn around the moment she found out their plan and say, “Merry Christmas, I am going back to Australia.” But she doesn’t because then we wouldn’t have the opportunity to see her and Tom fall in love again. Actually, I think it is likely they never stopped loving each other. This was one of those breakups where the two were too immature to really talk about their issues. Instead, Lily ran to Australia and Tom threw himself into his work so he wouldn’t have time to think anymore.
It’s entertaining if you can get past the ickiness of two “lovers” trying to get their adult children to shack up too.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2023This was a cute holiday romance full of first love, second chances, misunderstandings, miscommunications, and meddling parents. But it was interesting, and I liked the main characters and their parents. I liked the fact that both characters were dealing with real world issues and while they might not have handled things the best way, the journey to get there made for an entertaining listen and the ending was very satisfying. I enjoyed the narrator; she was a new to me voice but a good one for this story with nice tone changes for different characters and an overall enjoyable quality to her performance.

I almost DNFd but it's so short I figured I should finish it... Lilly is just so unlikeable. I get she's upset with Tom, but her internal dialogue is so childish and petty and I thought she was being way harder on him than necessary when he seemed to grow up into a nice dude. Thankfully she becomes a lot more reasonable and more likable in the end and I ended up mostly enjoying the story. Can't say I really recommend it unless you're looking for a quick, no steam listen for Christmas.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2021A great Christmas story. Funny, witty, and touching.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2021A cute story sprinkled with charm and Christmas cheer about forgiveness of self and others and second chances. Lily is going home to England for Christmas for the first time since her broken heart drove her across the world to Australia. To her utter shock and confusion, her mother is dating and living with the man from next door, who also happens to be the father of Tom, her ex-boyfriend and the reason for her broken heart. Oh, and by the way, the ex-boyfriend is also home for Christmas and is next door and surprise! Lilly must bunk next door under the same roof as Tom. I figured this would have a happy conclusion or would turn into a bloodbath, as the tension was so sharp between these two, I was sure someone would be bleeding before too long.
This story had so many unexpected twists that I enjoyed as well as some heart-wrenching ones that reminded me that strong manly men can be vulnerable and that’s absolutely acceptable. This was a short story but is packed full of interesting characters and goings on that it felt longer. The characters were likable and easy to relate to. I was in high anticipation as to whether Lily would stay and sort out this mess with Tom or take off back to Australia.
My Final Verdict: Readers looking to add some festive cheer to their Christmas will enjoy this story, with or without the fruitcake.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2021This book has heat, humor, friendship, loyalty, a dash of drama, family, and has two of my favorite tropes…enemies to lovers and second chances. Rachel Tidd does an amazing job portraying the characters, bringing them to life and humanizing them with their emotions, attitude and personality. She does more than giving their characters their voices, she falls into the roles and becomes the characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2021So... I sort of liked this. It was a nice Christmas listen and it's currently free on audible, so not much to complain about with that. As for the story itself... well, for me, it suffered from two unlikeable leads. I'm not completely sure how old they're supposed to be, but for most of the book they acted about fourteen. It was off-putting to read their immature reactions/dialogue. By the middle of this story, I had warmed up a little more to them. By the end I realised I wanted them to move on from each other. They didn't suit each other and it seemed geared up for that ending. Then suddenly the history and heartbreak was gone and all was well. I think their parents made the more interesting story/romance (even if it was obvious from the start what was really happening between them both).
Overall, if you have a few hours to spare and you're in the mood for a Christmas book, then maybe give this a try.
