it is easy to tell what the writers wrote and what nick embellished, he balances the yin to the yang.'
I didn't care for the movie, other than it was better than the other absurd pablum pawned off on amazon, but watching what nick does to a lackluster script--sheer gold!

nick f'n cage. he is like jack black, wysiwyg. acting since born. all of his mannerisms are nick cage patented.
no one can do what he does, no one. this movie starts out like 5 movies in one. regardless, the keystone is nick f'n cage. can you be as cool as nick f'n cage? I don't think so. even with all of the grecian formula in the world, he is still nick f'n cage. love that act, that swagger, that patter, that everything. he's got it.

This is a good movie. Cage does a great job portraying Cage, well played sir, well played. He is the same caliber an actor as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Jean Claude Van Dam, and similar actions stars. When Cage is ready to work, he can do a great job. Is it time to work yet Cage? I digress. This is a good movie with several script choices I did not agree with, but I am just one bloke, so who cares. If you want to try an above average action movie give this one a go.

I know all the Nick Cage haters will be out in force but just ignore them. This is one of the best movies he has done lately. I felt he did an excellent job of acting, again one of his better jobs as of late. The plot was engaging enough to keep me interested and the rest of the cast gave decent performances for the most part. As one other reviewer pointed out the gun fight scene at the end was a little on the goofy side and with a bigger budget the plot could have been developed more fully and smoothly. But all in all for Nick Cage fans it is a refreshing move in the right direction. Cage and Cusack are two of my favorite actors but both have seemed to be on a downward trajectory recently so hopefully Cage might be coming out of it.

Nick Cage does a really good job of not over-acting in this one. He plays a completely believable character, who is a bit of a mystery right up until the end. The story is good. Nick Cage's character is very compelling. There is a femme fatale who is pleasant to look at and whom has acting chops and a character to play that isn't wholly unpleasant.

So why three stars? Well, the gunplay is terrible. No one seems to know how to use one. The cop-car scene is a great example of that. Bullets go THROUGH car seats. No reason to have gone the way it did. Another example is the hotel office scene. The way it was shot, Cage's character is 100% exposed, but the guy shot the wall next to him with several shots for a good 10 seconds, before running away.

Add to that the fact that streaming on Amazon means that for a large part of the movie, there are no subtitles for the Spanish being spoken on screen. This would be fine, except that there is a LOT of it. If you do not know Spanish well, you will miss parts of the plot until much, much later because of this decision not to have subs for those parts. Very annoying.

Besides that, though, as I said, it is a good story, and weird as it sounds, I kinda want a part 2, but without all the problems this one had.

Although Nic Cage can do no wrong in my book this derivative film noir promises a lot but fails to deliver. After a good start, the director's attempt to manipulate cinematic time, like Tarantino, breaks down when we the audience are jerked into another story line that is a water-downed homage to the Euro-Crime dramas of the 1960's and 1970's and the Italian Giallo genre of the same time period. There is a connection between the beginning and what ensues but it becomes lost in the sauce. What we are left to witness is cheeky dialogue that is less than clever. The dialogue passages are long and boring and rather than pushing the film forward it bogs it down. The cinematography doesn't help. The opening sequences look as if they were shot on "unsteady-cam." A few times I thought I was watching an ID Discovery crime docudrama. The music, with the jangly guitar and blues moaning are another nod to QT but we've heard this soundtrack, or something like it before. And this is the problem with this movie: the writer and director are influenced by
creative cinematic trailblazers and genres but fail to make that leap from imitation and homage to full on gutsy balls-out film making. It is such a shame. I really wanted to like this movie.
