- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2018Wars of Scottish Independence was excellent.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2018This book puts the whole relatively recent vote for Scottish independence into perspective. It shows how England and Scotland have a long history of battles where thousands died, all in the name of the Scots trying to be free and the English trying to block them.
It's also very evident from the material in the book that the Scottish movement for independence had to face two major foes, only one of which was the English. The other foe, just as problematic as the other was the in-fighting among the Scottish nobility with an almost constant struggle for power, a struggle which weakened the Scottish movement and may very well have cost them their independence.
The person known as Braveheart is in the book along Edward I who ordered all Jews kicked out of England. He also wanted control of Scotland and the tax money he could get out of it. The fighting on both sides was vicious with many towns virtually wiped out, whether or not there was an actual battle or just a scorched-Earth type of thing.
The book also shows the principle that those with the better technology will eventually win. The English technological superiority was in their long-bow. The arrows could decimate and attacking group of Scots. (Although why the Scots didn't just make Roman-type shields is beyond me.)
The book also shows that England honored its treaties with Scotland just as well as the American government honored its own treaties with Native Americans.
There's also a long list of references in this book. A very, very interesting book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2021This is a book in name only, they basically simply lifted text from the Encyclopedia Britannica and reprinted it, its the main source for this "book". Its full of typos and incorrect dates that are off by 800 years. Its so lousy they did not even bother to put in page numbers. Its just putrid. Do not buy this under any circumstances
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2018Very brief, easy read, a few typos, but overall a good account of Scottish early history. Worth the time for a short overview.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2018Interesting if you are interested in Scottish history. I have trouble keeping all of the different battles straight and organized.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2022I'm a nerd for all people in a kilt and this book did a beautiful job departing information without turning it into a snooze fest. Great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2018A very unique book ! Here we have s man very similarly to William Wallace. Fighting for Scottish Independence to gain an identity against the British . To this day I still have a problem with keeping straight the difference between Great Britain & surrounding countries . Maybe someone will write a book about it lol!I know this came later in History . They would be friends & then horrible enemies. And throughout the book would fight then make peace & then fight again.
So, get a copy as I did & increase your knowledge of a lesser known historical figure!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Sent it back and got a fefund. It's little more than a thick pamphlet, and not a thick book as I expected.
Certainly not worth that price.
