The year: 1948. Magic is everywhere, the hallmark of progress. Hardboiled gumshoe Philip Lovecraft is a PI for hire, but his latest case, a search for a missing book called “The Necronomicon,” leads him down darker alleys than he’s ever traversed before, filled with black magic and hideous creatures intent on doing him harm. Charged with protecting a virtuous dame, finding a magical tome, and unravelling a murderous mystery, Lovecraft will have only his wits, his fists, and a trusty pistol to come out alive. And in this world, coming out undead is a distinct possibility…

Supernoirtural would be the perfect word for this film. Cast a Deadly Spell is a fascinating anomaly, a rare treat and a helluva fun ride. It was made for HBO in 1991, directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale, The Mask of Zorro) and starring Fred Ward (as Lovecraft), Clancy Brown, David Warner, and Julianne Moore as Lovecraft’s ex-lover and current gun moll, Connie Stone. And since it’s inexplicably never been released on DVD, it’s never seen the audience that it deserves. This is a pitch-perfect blend of film noir, droll comedy, and Lovecraftian horror. The script (by Joseph Dougherty) is smart, funny without being silly, and filled with perfectly-placed nods to H.P. Lovecraft’s oeuvre.

Fred Ward is fantastic as the gruff, acerbic detective, having great fun with the über-noir dialogue. Clancy Brown makes a magnificent gangster heavy, Julianne Moore would fit perfectly alongside Barbara Stanwyck as a classic noir dame, and David Warner is in prime form. Director Campbell fully embraces the tale’s pulpy roots and directs with the most stylish flair I’ve seen out of him; it’s almost as though he filmed it in the style of the old Roger Corman shlock films, with exaggerated shots and colors cranked up to 11. The performances ground the film and the direction gives it more class than its origins as a cheap made-for-cable movie should warrant. It’s a heady, exuberant pairing.

With the talent both behind and in front of the camera for this made-for-TV flick, it’s incredible that it’s never seen a DVD release. It managed an ugly VHS transfer (and, thanks to the internet, a rather cruddy but serviceable copy can be downloaded) but it’s high time for HBO to release this gem on home video. Two-fisted, brawny action, horror-tinged, a tad campy (in all the right ways)…this is a magnificently fun film that needs to seen.

This is just a, flat out, AWESOME movie; set in a cool 'alt-40s LA, where magick is used as commonly as electricity'.

I've been a huge Fred Ward fan since I saw him in the, also AWESOME, sadly underrated, Remo Williams; as a kid. He shines here (basically, pulling out his gumshoe & grins character he also uses, to crackling perfection, in Robert Altman's, genius tour-de-force, The Player) as the 'only private dick, in LA, who don't use magick'.

This, 90s, made-for-HBO film combines MANY of my favorite things: Pulp 40s noir, the LA streetcar conspiracy, 'Lovecraftian' magick, private dicks spittin' wise, rich dames up to no good, etc. & does a great job of keeping it all true to source, juicy & lean.

If what I've said here makes you wanna watch this, watch it. It's a great little gem, w great actors, fun special effects & it's fun to pull out from time to time, like a favorite pulp paperback.

I actually enjoyed this movie. First, it's from 1991. Second, it's a made for HBO TV movie. So it doesn't have the look of a major budget Hollywood movie. It has more of a "video" feeling to it. The cast is good. Fred Ward as the 1940's era gum shoe. Weary, street-hardened, chain smoking, Bogart-y style of ex-cop turned private eye. Julianne Moore plays the femme fatale. and Gale Ann Hurd directs- probably an early project for her. It's 1940's Hollywood. And the world has turned to magic. Not Penn & Teller. The real witch-y, demon-y, dark magic. Some use it for bad. Others for good. Our hero (Fred Ward) avoids magic for good or bad, and decides to play it fair - that is, non-magic. Of course he's at a big disadvantage, but doesn't good conquer all? The quality of thrills and chills is about at the level of Goosebumps, if you remember that on Nickolodeon. Or, at the level of the original Ghostbusters. Lots of funny sight gags throughout held my attention. Always look around the scene for something operating by magic. I enjoyed the movie cliches, from 1940's film noir to Ghostbusters style sight gags. Much better than I expected. Fun for the whole family.

Very well produced mix of Film Noir and Lovecraftian/horror homage. Beautiful color photography and score by Curt Sobel to lend atmosphere to this stylish film. Streaming it here in HD is the best way to see it until someone releases this properly on Blu Ray. It looks better and richer here then it ever did on HBO back in the day. Fred Ward is perfect as the Marlowe type of detective dealing with the alternate 1948 Hollywood where the use of magic is common place. Julianne Moore looks every bit the 40s femme fatale. I know they eventually did a sequel with a different cast but it was a real missed opportunity. This would make a great series today. Hopefully someone will release this on blu ray soon. Take the hint Scream Factory!

What a GREAT twist to an old-line gumshoe detective story! Fred Ward was born for this kind of part - that FACE! His cool cynicism is PERFECT and he remains unflappable throughout. Julianne Moore is WONDERFUL as "the vamp" who's the bad guy's girl, but wants out. She didn't actually sing, but we totally believed she was. What a delivery! We've seen her in such a variety of roles in which she always excels, and this was one of her earlier ones which shows her immense talent. The plot, dialog, and acting are so fitting to the genre. .The way magic was woven into the story kind of reminded us of how High-Tech sometimes seems to "make things easier" but simply lulls people into laziness. This movie will definitely be worth another viewing after a time - it's loaded with cleverness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD of a cult 90's film

Merging witchcraft and the supernatural with the 1940's Detective genre works wonderfully. I saw this on cable and VHS in the early 90's and have wanted a copy on DVD (or Blu ray) for ages. The quality of the picture is great I cannot see much more improvement if it gets a Bluray release. For English viewers like myself, it is easy to set to English audio and without subtitles.
Great Purchase
