Top reviews from the United States

I thought this was a real gem. I read a review of another film by the same director and since I liked the other film, I decided to try this one. I'm so glad I did. It was riveting, but at the same time I found it so hard to cope with the building tensions. It's masterful and a deep dive, with a lot of room for potent reflections afterward. Deeper themes than meet the eye.

To begin with, I agree completely with the previous review by David Baldwin. Released theatrically in 1964, "Seance on a Wet Afternoon", wonderfully directed by Bryan Forbes, remains one of the high watermarks of 60s cinema, with two of the best lead performances you are ever likely to see.

Filmed in stark black and white, "Seance" is set in a rather drab area of London. Myra (Kim Stanley) is a professional medium who holds seances in her home once a week for a small, sad, gullible group of people. Clearly she is not very successful or well-known, a situation she wants to change desperately. With the help of her weak, malleable husband, Billy (Richard Attenborough), she plots to kidnap the young daughter of an affluent couple, hold her for ransom, and not only collect the money but "astonish" the police and the public with her "psychic" powers in "finding" the young girl. As this sordid plan develops, Myra's already-delicate mental state deteriorates even further, complicated by memories of her own deceased child and her "conversations" with this lost son. As for Billy, considering his total lack of self-confidence, it's a miracle that he is able to pull off the kidnapping at all. I will not reveal more of the plot, or the memorable outcome, for first-time viewers, but the rising suspense continues to keep your eyes transfixed to the screen.

As Myra, Kim Stanley is a revelation--what a superb actress she was ! Unfortunately for film buffs, Ms. Stanley made very few films, preferring the theatre. Her performance in "Seance" is matched by Richard Attenborough as the weak, ineffectual Billy, whose main purpose in life is to please his patronizing, self-absorbed wife. The rest of the cast is solid, with Nanette Newman (Mrs. Bryan Forbes) particularly effective as the kidnapped girl's distraught mother.

The DVD exhibits a clear, wide, black and white image, with some occasional lines. Unfortunately, for such a prestigious film, there are no extras. Sadly, Ms. Stanley has passed on, but some comments from Lord Attenborough (who also produced the film) would have been fascinating, I'm sure.

The premise of this film will still strike a chord for many of us. Children are still being kidnapped by disturbed people--we see stories on the news far too often. In this way, "Seance on a Wet Afternoon" remains chilling and relevant--when you add some of the finest acting in cinema history, you have a truly memorable disc to add to your collection. Highly recommended.

Excellent British film about a nice husband and his monstrous wife who he enables in her ludicrous fantasies about a child she never had. Her performing of seances for the locals is simply another means to keep herself locked in her fantasy world
The crimes she hatches up and sends hubby out to materialize are also comitted to indulge her.
Pactrick Magee should receive an award for most over used actor in British film history as he shows up here to coax her out of her insanity and face reality.
A great movie, very original, expertly acted and beautifully filmed.
This should get a BFI release if it hasn't already.

Kim Stanley gave an Academy Award performance. The film was disturbing, and yet, held your attention throughout. Fascinating the power that Myra, Ms. Stanley, had over her husband, though he knew that she was mentally ill. Scary.

Ms. Stanley - leading edge stage actress /paralleled with Brando in the '50s - hasn't much available on DVD. I first became enchanted by her as the narrator in "To Kill A Mockingbird". Her subtly nuanced voice gave the story a richness of life - an elegiac river rolling back through time and place.
I found "Séance" and was pulled into her hypnotic performance with Richard Attenborough. I wish more of her performances were available. She was very special. She comes off the screen at you without seeming to do anything,
She played Jessica Lang's mother in "Frances" - 2 powerful actresses at pivotal points in their careers. Kim Stanley should be remembered and appreciated.

I love this movie it s excellent!! Acting is wonderful, story holds your attention beginning to end. I also wanted to mention the seller, my package came on time and was wrapped and protected with care. So often you receive a package just thrown in an envelope and mailed ( not a good idea even through dvd was in a case going through the mail it can easily get damages ) but this seller to extra protection with this item and included a card with contact information if I had any problems. Which I do not due to the care they put in to packaging item. I would buy from this seller again with confidence Thank-You Chris NEMR

HEED THE WARNINGS: Several comment about the sound. I, too, had to turn my volume way up, which distorted the amazing score, and even dialogue, messing with the story. BUT - if this is as-good-as-it-gets, this movie is one of a kind, with two as-good-as-it-gets performances. 'The Whisperers' is Forbes' masterpiece, but this.is pretty close, inimitably stamped. It's a must have for any real movie lover.

I enjoyed it. Creepy in a very subtle way with a desperate sort of tension.

Some people are complaining about the sound but I streamed it and had no issues.

FAMOUS NAME
5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping tragic tale of a sick woman's mind.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 26, 2007
This is a very claustrophobic and repressive dark drama that has almost gone un-noticed by the critics since it was made in 1964.

This is the sad and tragic story of a very sick woman (Kim Stanley) whose never recovered after giving birth to a dead baby. More tragic still; her husband (played by Richard Attenborough) is so in love with her still, it becomes a pitiful and sensitive script - despite the horrors of child kidnapping. One scene in particular towards the end will move anyone to tears as the couple exchange their words of love for each other when it would appear that all is lost for them both - and in particular, Stanley's character vowing to do everything for the love of her husband, but only after he's committed the worst of crimes - and all in the name of love for her... Richard Attenborough's character is often regarded as weak, but is merely a victim of being strong in love. Think about that one when you're reaching for the tissues!

I suspect the only other actress that could have competed for the lead performance was Geraldine Page, who uncannily, is not unlike Stanley - both in features and acting style. This is a tough movie for all its cast, and features some of the big names of its day, including Mark Eden, (whose handsome good looks will make the ladies swoon) and a very beautiful Nanette Newman as the unfortunate parents of the missing child.

This title has been very slow in coming out in the UK - indeed it was only ever released on video in the US.

5.0 out of 5 stars A multi-layered thesis.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 2, 2016
A somewhat incredulous plot set in a London of the 1960s. The acting from Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough more than makes up for any shortfalls in the plot itself.

Myra Savage (Kim Stanley) is married to a devoted husband named Billy (Richard Attenborough). (The couple would appear to be in their thirties.) Myra fancies herself as a professional mystic, and in an attempt to gain wide recognition of her powers she has devised an intricate scheme that involves kidnapping ("borrowing" in her language) a young girl of rich parentage.

The ransom asked for the child's safe return is secondary to the status she hopes to earn for herself when she demonstrates her insight into the fate of the young girl. It could be said, therefore, that the film is a multi-layered thesis.

Putting the conspiracy to one side, this is a study in psychic phenomenon, the interfaces between sanity and insanity, the credible and the incredible. "You'd need to be mad to want to be sane in a mad world". Work that one out!

Attenborough's devotion takes the path from blind obedience to enlightenment, or at the very least resignation as to his wife's bizarre fancies and behaviour that evolve over the few days of the conspiracy.

The facial close-ups are remarkable in detail and nuance. From a purely visual point of view Attenborough's "fake" nose takes a little bit of getting used to but this is a minor quibble and in no way detracts from his performance.

A well paced "drama" of close on two hours with excellent picture and sound quality, fine production and sets. I found no problem with the sound as reported by another reviewer, but then I listen on headphones via a laptop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 22, 2013
This is one of those films that clearly falls into the "hidden gems" category. Although it was nominated for (and won) a fair number of major awards in its day, it is one of those films that seems to have slipped into obscurity, despite having Richard Attenborough as the male lead.

I won't go into the plot - which is intriguing and totally sinister - but the performances from Attenborough and Nanette Newman are sublime. However, it is the performance from Kim Stanley as Myra Savage that draws the breath from you, it is so perfect and commanding. The calculating, sinister menace that she exudes so effortlessly is disturbing and lies very much at the heart of this murky thriller. Stanley was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance, yet lost out to Julie Andrews for 'Mary Poppins' - unbelievable! John Barry's soundtrack is spot-on, demonstrating the continual sense of urgency that underlies the plot. Forbes' direction is sharp and focussed.

I found the DVD transfer to be very good - there were no real marks or damage to the print that distracted me. However, I did find the mono soundratck very 'flat' and quiet; in fact, I was actually astonished at how high a volume I needed to have my television! The case that the DVD came in was, it has to be said, the flimsiest I have even seen! But these are minor quibbles: 'Seance' is an amazing film and demonstrates the outstanding quality of some of the films the British film industry has produced over the years.

Highly recommended.
