When I first saw the previews for the new show, "How to Get Away With Murder," I dismissed it as totally unrealistic, and figured it wouldn't last more than one season. I disliked how simplified the show made law school and the training of lawyers, as well as unrealistically portrayed lawyers weaving in and out of drastically different legal specialties, like criminal law one day, estate law the next, and a civil tort case the next. Completely unrealistic. The night the show launched, there was nothing else on TV so I watched it. And was SO surprised!

YES, this series is totally unrealistic. YES, lawyers are not trained like that, and lawyers do not bounce between different areas of the law. But, this show is IMMENSELY entertaining. It has the hallmarks of a great Shonda Rhimes show - a somewhat mysterious setting that the general public likes to get a closer look at (e.g., Grey's Anatomy - the world of high risk surgeries; Scandal - the underbelly of politics all the way to the President), plus all sorts of amazing twists and turns in the storyline to keep you guessing at every turn. The plot is well thought out, and must be planned for years into the future. Each of the central 10 or so characters are developed, interesting, and you want to learn more about. The way Shonda Rhimes weaves the individual stories and backgrounds of the characters into the greater plot is masterful, just like she has done with her prior shows.

Beyond the page turning thrills of the plot, the actors and actresses in How to Get Away with Murder are excellent! Viola Davis is a force not often seen in television shows. You love her, but fear her at the same time. The handful of law students who become key characters are so different from each other, and have fascinating backgrounds and histories, but, somehow, gel together in a very realistic way that real law students do when thrown together during the first year of law school when you don't get to choose your classmates and study partners. Their interactions are very realistic, despite that some of the major happenings in the show are not, which lends the show a great credibility. Shona Rhimes did this with Grey's Anatomy also. Some of the main story lines were completely outlandish - but the interactions and emotions between the characters were real and honest.

If you want to become engrossed in a story with twists and turns, humor plus drama, and always be kept guessing, watch How to Get Away With Murder. I can't wait for the new season to start!

Annalisse Keating (Viola Davis) is a brilliant lawyer with slick moves and questionable morals. She has five intern students and two staff members who help her clients get out of the most hopeless situations. Not a single one of the main characters is likeable and still you will love each and every one of them. Each episode has a new high profile case that the team has to handle (warning: most cases are wonderfully, deliciously, over the top - in acting and plot.) and they are all tied together by a main murder mystery. This is more of a whydunit than a whodunit because the main murder is leaked in episode one.
This series jumps back and forth between the night of the murder and the current situation/case, which can be a bit confusing but I guarantee you will only want to watch it again and again!
The standout here is the acting. Viola Davis is incredible! Vulnerable, in charge, manipulating, conniving, she's constantly 4 steps ahead of everyone else. Her students/interns/protégés are not as innocent and perfect as they believe they are. Her employees are both sinister and mesmerizing.
You have to watch this series, it's one of the best out there. Hands down.
My only complaint? Why this was not issued as a Blu Ray???

First episode didn't do much for me & I almost stopped watching. This second episode sucked me in! Steven Webber is deliciously wicked in this episode & his first scene with our Scooby gang made me rewatch this one a few times! My 23 yr old son is now sucked in from watching it with me too. The cases are intriguing and then figuring out what is going on in the personal lives of this cunning competitive group while figuring out the big murder is superbly done! Just when I think I know what happened, bam! More evidence or suspects emerge and my theories are scrapped & I start again! Viola Davis is amazing as expected! She could make the phone book exciting! The cast of students are also surprisingly well done & learning more about them is unexpected in some ways & spot on in others. I'm not a fan of Scandal but I am a day one fan of Greys Anatomy (medical person here & I'm impressed with the realism on Greys) & I'm now a hooked fan of HTGAWM! Shonda is amazing as usual! I'm sure Scandal is amazing too but I just don't get into political dramas.

While How to Get Away with Murder is by no means an accurate telling of law school or court cases, it is incredibly entertaining and downright gripping. Each episode focuses on one murder case that Professor Keating and her team of students work to solve, but also weaves in an overarching storyline that delves into a student's murder on campus. Of course, there are affairs, romantic scandals and other subplots that also add to the drama. The episodes move quickly and leave you hanging.

I don't usually like crime shows and I'm not a Grey's or Scandal fan (sorry, Shonda), but How to Get Away with Murder has me totally hooked. Viola Davis makes this show - her impeccable acting elevates it to the next level, which makes you feel a little less slimy for watching such an unrealistic thriller. Without her, it could verge on a "Law and Order", trashy kind of drama. With her, it's AWESOME.

Great for your next TV binge.

5.0 out of 5 stars MARAVILLOSA SERIE DE TV!

Viola Davis is a brilliant actress in this series. Her character is at once warm and kind and also flawed, scheming and plays dirty.

Each episode whips along using the same formula of moving the murder mystery to the next stage whilst using a sometimes rather improbable 'case' for her minions to do the legal leg work and learn about an aspect of law in Davis's university lectures whilst applying it to that case.

Each of her minions - star pupils on her course, have their own emotional baggage to contend with along with the big mess they have gotten themselves into which the story revolves around. Each is also flawed in character and a few get a little irritating at times. Each episode has a big cliff hanger at the end, have to admit each one did get a little more far fetched and contrived making me shout 'WHAAAAT???!' but I was hooked well and truly.

Interesting to see the series not shy away from having a fairly prominent gay character, one of Davis's student minions is gay and he uses this in a mainly underhand and quite sexual way to get information and dish the dirt for cases being investigated. Having said that, many questionable and underhand actions are carried out by all the legal team, especially Davis's own 'qualified' team, to get ahead in the game.

Viola Davis is not afraid to appear stripped of all her makeup and wigs in this series either which lends great pathos to much of her performance. Need to get Series II quickly as this series ends leaving many unanswered questions.

On devient vite accro !

Totalement addict.
