Traditions: Essays on the Japanese Martial Arts and Ways Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 71 ratings

The goals of the budo - the martial arts and ways of Japan - lie in refining the body and spirit. These goals are not always the obvious ones - and are learned only through the guidance and direction of great teachers.

The techniques, methods, and rituals of the sensei can serve as guides to a well-lived life - and provide invaluable lessons for today's martial artists. This collection of essays includes discussions of:

  • The spirit of ryomi...
  • The importance of yuyo...
  • The significance of ma...

With its focus on traditional martial arts, and fascinating stories that illustrate key martial arts principles, Traditions will be required listening for serious martial artists.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in the traditions of martial arts with lots of chapters covering many aspects of both historic and current ways. The audio narration is very well delivered by Brian Nishii who brings the content alive with his particular 'accent' and makes you want to keep listening for the next interesting and exciting chapter.

Excellent essays in the style of Dave Lowry. So if you like any of his other books you will like this one too. If you haven't read any of his essays before any one of his books is worth a first try.

Dave Lowry is one of the best martial arts writers. This book shows the value of traditional martial arts and reminds me of how those riches and depth are being lost.

There is a challenge to remain calm of the inner- self. The writing from this book invited me to look deep within my-own-self for the peace of heart, mind, and spirit.

If you have read D. Lowry's books this is a great one to add to your collection, if you haven't even better. This is a great way for us barbaric westerners to understand the budo way of life. Great life lessons and things to ponder in this book.

When it comes to the Japanese martial ways, there are few authorities as knowledgeable and articulate as Mr. Lowery. This book presents in short essay form, dozens of wonderful lessons that can be learned from pursuing budo. That being said, Mr. Lowery takes himself too seriously and the messages he seeks to impart can be lost on the reader. I have read many of Mr. Lowery's books, and this is entirely consistent with his other publications.....a treasure trove of information presented in a 'stuffy' manner.
