If you want to see a good movie about Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth 1, do NOT fall into the crap trap of the newly made Hollywood abomination films about her! This is the ONLY film about Her that captures the most from history, accurately, and with performance unmatched by today's actors in my opinion. The only other film that even comes close is Helen Mirren's version, but it leaves out a lot of history, as it takes place in her later years. Elizabeth R tries to capture everything it can, from King Edward, to Mary, to Queen Elizabeth 1 coronation to Her death. It's a wonderful trip.

Does this epic film look flashy and gaudy like Hollywood likes to produce? No... thank goodness! In fact, I believe that the quality of this film (sort of stage like) actually adds to its realism! Personally, I'm sick and tired of all the computer graphic, sex lies videotape BS coming out of Hollywood these days... especially when it comes to historical icons such as Her Majesty! If She were alive today..... heads would roll...

Is it's film quality up to today's standards? Not exactly but the story, actors, and overall feel of this movie FAR outweigh these minor issues. Again, I feel this is a very positive attribute to this film!

Does this movie capture all historical facts? Of course not. In order to do that you'd have to make a year long series and so far, every time Hollywood tries to do this, they screw it up with 21st century sex and BS soap opera crap. This movie gives you a very good idea and insight into what her life and reign were probably like.

Among those of us who actually study Her Majesty (and love her), there is no movie made in the last 30 years that captures Bess more accurately than this one. I WISH.... oh.... how I WISH... that someone would take the script from this movie, expound on it to include more detail on other historical facts, LEAVE SEX OUT and KEEP Renaissance MORALS, and have QUALITY actors like Elizabeth R had in it, and make an EPIC 1 year long saga... I would pay HUGE to see Elizabeth R redone in this way, and keep its spirit! Sadly, I do not believe there are any Directors or actors alive today, or writers for that matter, who could do this... it would be too hard, they are too 21st century in mind and spirit, and they would probably want to throw sex sex sex in it mixed with soap opera fantasy... and ruin it.

Anyway, if you want the BEST movie about Her, this is it! And will probably be the only one...

The world has missed Her, and I think in silent mourning for Her, for 500 years - and for good reason. However, at least we have good books, good documentaries, and films such as Elizabeth R to help us relate to a time when things were simpler, people were honorable, and leaders were leaders and wanted nothing more but the best for their people. Perhaps this is what we miss... what we desire most of all.... and why we miss her so... 500 years later...

Queen Elizabeth I is one of the greatest monarchs in English history, and many consider her the greatest. During her reign from 1558 to 1603, England advanced as a nation, solidifying its place as a strong European power, and it flowered culturally as well. "Elizabeth R" looks back at the life of the queen, consisting of six plays with Glenda Jackson starring in the lead role. This DVD set contains the entire series that was originally broadcast on the BBC in early 1971 and on PBS in the U.S. a year later.

Elizabeth's political acumen became apparent to some around her years before she assumed the throne. The series highlights her avoidance of marriage for political considerations, her assembling of her court, and her insistence on a proper justice system and strong currency for England.

The mid-to-late sixteenth century was a time of turmoil in England and across Europe. Elizabeth had to deal with false rumors and conspiracies against her, and she made personal appearances across the country to strengthen her position in the public eye and her bond with the English people, reminding the viewer that politics and public opinion matter even in monarchies.

Her epoch was a time of conflict and jockeying for power among the major European nations. It was an era of religious conflicts as well, and the major threat to England during her reign was the 1588 attempt by Spain to invade England and depose her. The scene when the queen is notified of the glorious defeat of the Spanish Armada is one of the most memorable of the series.

The viewer can watch these plays with a historical commentary feature, and a separate disc contains special features looking back at the life and character of Elizabeth. "Elizabeth R" is considered a classic nearly a half-century after its broadcast and would be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in the early modern age.

I first watched Elizabeth R more than 30 years ago and it was my first encounter with the tremendous talents of Glenda Jackson. She is quite convincing as the mercurial Queen. The series covers her life from her teens, when she was in danger of plots against her life by the allies of her Catholic Sister, Queen Mary, through her accession to the throne and her growth into a cunning statesman navigating her country through the peril of the machinations of Spain and France over the 35 years of her reign. Her legendary temper is on full display, and we watch England become a great power in a production with impressive acting, realistic sets, and an outstanding script.

While I enjoyed the more recent Elizabeth movie with Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Christopher Eccleston, it is over dramatized (quite effectively so, I must add) and takes a lot of liberty in its portrayal of Rush as Sir Francis Walsingham. But I find Elizabeth R to be a more convincing representation of the real historical figures, and Glenda Jackson always comes to mind when I think about “The Virgin Queen,” such was the impact of seeing her award-winning performance. This set is a must have, and will always have a prominent and honored place in my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Iconic Performance by Glenda Jackson is a Superb BBC Production

Ms. Jackson's Elizabeth remains the Best & most convincing interpretation of Gloriana that I have seen. For history buffs, "Elizabeth R" is a joy to behold: costumes, speech, music & dance are authentic. Even the way in which Elizabeth holds her quill pen is accurate, based on illustrations from Tudor times.

Jackson's portrayal of Elizabeth leans on the Freudian concept of a traumatized child whose sexuality was warped by the horror of her mother's execution. I suspect that Elizabeth was seriously affected by the advances of her predatory stepfather, Lord Thomas Seymour, whose sexual interference with her led directly to his death. Jackson conveys Elizabeth's ambiguous attraction/repulsion toward men beautifully.

The supporting cast is likewise flawless. Robert Hardy is better know as Siegfried Farnon in "All Creatures Great & Small," but his Lord Robert Dudley is a wonder of barely controlled lust & longing for power. Ronald Hines is a suitably earnest William Cecil, and Vivian Pickles is a theatrical Mary, Queen of Scots.

A word about the costumes. Elizabeth Waller recreated quite a few of Elizabeth's iconic gowns based on portraits, and the result is a luminous, authentic look to the production.

The TV series was filmed in various locations in England, including Penshurst Place & Chiddingstone. This adds to the sense of reality of this series, because producers made a conscious effort to evoke the spirit of Tudor times.

So if one seeks a compelling view of the life of Queen Elizabeth I, this 1971 BBC series is the best drama to watch.

I watched this as a kid and remembered it fondly. Have just re-watched and thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting was top notch and the costumes were wonderful. It's a great companion to Henry VIII with Keith Michell. Would recommend to anyone that enjoys this type of TV series.

I have watched this series about six times as it is mesmerising and its production. The whole thing is really a series of plays. The language is so ornate and beautiful and the acting is superb.
