Never Enough Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 773 ratings

At 39, Nancy Kissel had it all: the royal lifestyle of the expatriate wife, three young children, and what a friend described as "the best marriage in the universe". That marriage - to investment banker Robert Kissel - ended one November night in 2003 in their luxury apartment high above Hong Kong's glittering Victoria Harbour, when Robert was murdered and Nancy became the prime suspect. Her 2005 trial captivated Hong Kong's expatriate community and attracted global attention. Less than a year after the jury returned its unexpected verdict, Rob's brother, Andrew, was also found dead - stabbed in the back at his multimillion-dollar Greenwich mansion.

Never Enough is the harrowing, true story of two brothers who grew up wanting to own the world but instead wound up murdered half a world apart - and of Nancy Kissel, a modern American woman for whom having it all might not have been enough.

He's written a few great true-crime books and this one certainly is interesting. But don't expect to find the pinnacles of writing and investigation of Fatal Vision. And Nancy Kissel certainly seems like someone whose layers could have peeled back much more. How she became a psycho requires some explanation. She seemed to be in the range of normal before leaving the States. A few years later, she's poisoning her husband and a guest, who is driving his child home on the highway (truly this "lady" cares for no one but herself), sleeping for nights with a bloody corpse and shopping by day.

How did she expect to get away with this, is what I really want to know - surrounded by people in her home with her murdered, bludgeoned husband rolled up and stinking on the floor in a carpet? The general facts of the case have been publicized but I was hoping to watch the sociopath emerge over time - but she went over the cliff fast. One thing is for sure - she's a nasty piece of work. Hope she stays right where she is and deserves to be.

True crime writers are really court reporters in disguise; often straight-jacked by the timeline of the murder, writing sequentially but confined by the death and background, the trial transcripts and the admissions of the living of their impressions of the dead. Joe McGinniss, an energetic and successful writer of true crime (recently of Wasilla, Alaska fame), knows how to portray the killer and the victim, describe a death scene, snatch bits of trial transcripts and letters and emails and make them part of his book. With little creativity, but a lot of travel, he achieves this with a sordid tale of death and adultery among the rich American expats of Hong Kong. Blood, sex and money drive the tale and make the book an interesting and fast read. Likeable or admirable creatures are few and McGinniss makes no apologies for them even tho some were his sources. The news recently reported that the murdering wife was convicted for the second time by a Hong Kong jury which speaks admirably for the quality of Chinese justice . . . for the moment.

I'm not generally a fan of true crime novels, although I understand their merits: when done well, they can reveal much about the backgrounds and experiences of those who are cold-blooded killers (or reveal that their cruelty is inexplicable). Even so, I tend to be drawn to other types of books.

I think that fact is important because I found this book impossible to put down. On the surface, the family at the center of this book, Robert and Nancy Kissel, seem to have it all. She is very attractive and he is an upwardly mobile, very ambitious businessman.

But both husband and wife had some serious personality problems, ones that led to tragedy. Nancy ended up committing a terrible crime and..well, this is where I feel ambivalent about how much to reveal. You can read the other reviews here for more details about the specifics of what happened.

I'd like to focus on what makes this book worth reading, even for those who don't usually like true crime - the writing and style of the author. McGinnis takes a lot of complex details about all the people in this book, including those outside the immediate family and is able to write a taut, suspenseful book. That is an art.

It is especially tricky in a book about the Kissel family because there is not just one murder in this book. McGinness is covering more than one tragic event and connecting it to the beginning, back when Robert and Nancy Kissel first married and then set off on a destructive spiral, from a seemingly perfect beginning. All of this is set in a background of wealth and that adds extra fascination to the tale.

In reading this, I was chilled by the description of Nancy, who seems to have a heart of ice or perhaps a combination of anger and lust for revenge when she feels wronged - which she does, often. Her husband did have to spend a lot of time overseas, taking care of business, but that isn't enough to explain all the issues in this marriage. McGinness goes into more detail. Also, Nancy's husband, Robert, has a brother who also has serious problems and he comes into the story as well. It just gets more and more intriguing, with one development after another.

Anyone who likes true crime stories will like this book. It is written by Joe McGinniss, who has been one of the best true crime writers for over 20 years, so you know that it will be well-written coming from him, and it is. It is an in-depth telling of the relationship between an all-around great guy - the kind every woman dreams of - (smart, nice, wealthy, good-looking) and his seemingly equally perfect wife, and the down-ward spiral of their relationship after having reached the pinnacle of worldly success.

I think it is the kind of book that you will have a hard time putting down and one that you will have a hard time forgetting about once you have finished it. Their story really gripped me and it think it will anyone who likes to wonder about the psychological drives of people in their relationships, and ponder how things can go so badly even when everything in one's life seems unerringly set for success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great research into one of Hong Kong's most disturbing crimes.

I read this book in record time, as I simply could not put it down. Hong Kong was gripped by this story at the time. The front pages of the local newspapers couldn't find anything else to report on, such was the clamour for trying to unravel the mystery. Now, great research by the author has helped us to put together exactly what happened. Even now, years on, it is a truly fascinating, albeit rather macabre, story.
