This new hardcover edition brings together the first five volumes of The History of Middle-earthThe Book of Lost Tales, Parts 1 and 2, The Lays of Beleriand,The Shaping of Middle-earth, and The Lost Road—into one volume.

J.R.R. Tolkien is famous the world over for his unique literary creation, exemplified in
The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. What is less well known, however, is that he also produced a vast amount of further material that greatly expands upon the mythology and numerous stories of Middle-earth, and which gives added life to the thousand-year war between the Elves and the evil spirit Morgoth, and his terrifying lieutenant, Sauron.

It was to this enormous task of literary construction that Tolkien’s youngest son and literary heir, Christopher, applied himself to produce the monumental and endlessly fascinating series of twelve volumes,
The History of Middle-earth.

Very nice addition to my Tolkien library

Very nice addition to my Tolkien library
This is volume 1 of a well put together three volume set of "The History of Middle Earth."The binding is fairly sturdy, the paper quality is pretty decent, and the font is reasonable. The addition of the ribbon marker is a nice touch! My only quibble is that the dust jacket for volume 1 has a misprint. If you look at the front, you'll see that the first five books of the History are correctly mentioned. However, the introduction on the front inside flap is for the third, not the first volume, as it mentions the final three books in the series.I actually ordered a replacement copy of this volume, and the error was repeated, so it must be a bad batch of dust jackets for Volume 1.That aside, this book looks as though it should provide me many years of service as I plumb the depths of all things Tolkien!

great book on middle earth history

A delightful read for those wishing for an ever deeper understanding of Tolkien's early works with notations and commentary by both the author and his son. The intricate and complex world created by Tolkien becomes even more profound after reading 'Laws and Customs among of the Eldar' when the author explains such things as the rites concerning betrothal and marriage, naming traditions, and death. The 'Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth', in my opinion, is the jewel of this volume. During the 'Debate' the reader learns that there was love between a human and an elf long before the Tale of Beren and Luthien. However, the story of Aegnor and Andreth seems to me a tragedy as the two were never able to act on their love as it was wartime and the elves did not - by both custom and nature - marry or have children. This volume is definitely worth it for anyone who desires either an informative text or another well-written story.

I don't want to have a limit on how many words I have to write in a review, that is one of the reasons I don't take the time to do these on amazon.com. I have a lot to write and I don't feel like writing lengthy reviews on each of them. there for don't expect me to write anything about your co.

This is a best read for the dialogue between Finrod and Andreth, which -- unlike many of the other posthumously published works of JRRT -- was complete and considered canonical by the author.

The book was great, but it was delivered loose in the box, causing some damage to the pages.

Just as advertised. Dust cover was a little worn but the book was advertised as used 'very good'. Binding is solid and pages are spotless.
