In Any Lifetime: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 875 ratings

A devoted husband defies fate and risks everything to find the one universe where his beloved wife is still alive in this bold and thought-provoking novel.

Dr. Jonas Cullen has spent his career as a groundbreaking physicist defying the odds. But on the best night of his life—the night his wife, Amanda, tells him they’re finally having a baby—everything is taken away when a tragic car accident claims the lives of Amanda and their unborn child.

Gutted by pain, Jonas sets out to find a way to bring back Amanda—or rather, find a parallel universe in which she’s still alive. But that’s easier said than done. As Jonas comes to understand all too well, the universe favors certain outcomes…and Amanda’s death is one of them.

Guggenheim’s novel takes readers on a suspenseful journey, intercutting scenes of Jonas’s frantic, present-day search across multiple realities with glimpses from the past of his unfolding romance and eventual marriage. Will Jonas and Amanda reunite in some other world, or will fate succeed in taking her from him forever?

From the Publisher

Some go to the ends of the earth for love, but one man will go to the ends of the universe. In Any Lifetime is what would happen if Michael Crichton had written The Time Traveler’s Wife.

When Jonas, a physicist, loses his pregnant wife, Amanda, he puts what had been only theories—until now—into practice, and sets off to find a universe where she is still alive. The odds are against him, because the universe actually seems to believe in destiny, which means there is only one universe out of billions where Amanda still lives. Now, Jonas has to fight not only against fate, but also against alternate versions of himself
and the doubts in his own heart to find out whether it’s possible to love someone too much.

I could not read this fast enough, eager to experience Guggenheim’s just-slightly-different versions of our world, and found myself screaming in frustration along with Jonas when he discovered yet another world where Amanda didn’t exist, then crying happy tears while reliving their love story. I hope all versions of
you enjoy this spellbinding book that proves that the laws of physics are no match for love.

The idea of parallel universes has been in novels and films in many different forms, but although this story was mildly interesting, I kept waiting for a fresh take. And after all our protagonist went through I felt the ending was a little too neat.

Fast paced and well told, this is first a love story, filled with the expected and anticipated elements amongst a few well positioned surprises. As Science fiction, it takes acceptable license with imagination and a future, including the chapters that address one that’d terrifying. Fun read

…both in the story and in my reaction to it. During the first third of the book, so much happens so quickly that I had a hard time imagining how the author could keep up the pace. Then everything kind of slows down and turns into adventures in the multiverse, crossed with “The Fugitive.” Throughout, the protagonist, Jonas, keeps making choices that left me wondering why a guy so smart wouldn’t see where they might take him. And they do. Then, the last third of the story kind of explodes back into all kinds of action, plunging ahead to a resolution that may or may not be satisfying, because a lot of rules suddenly seem to have changed. Still, I didn’t what to put it down and it kept me engaged, even during the more leisurely paced parts of the story. And while that story does leave a lot of unanswered questions, there are no significantly dangling plot threads as might easily have been left with this kind of story. Well, maybe one up on the roof, but I’m going to go back and take another look at the ending to be sure. So good, but not great—an easy four stars, and probably would make a good movie.

Marc writes with a compelling style. His plot unfolds with a steady throttling of suspense that builds to a satisfying crescendo to the last page. His characters are well defined and developed with some brutal and heartbreaking story arcs that would do George RR Martin proud . Highly recommend

. Super light read the plot repeats itself which is helpful if you expect to be interrupted a lot or can only read a little bit at a time. Also, no character development so you don't have to worry about getting to know them. The Multiverse is in interesting premise so that that is another nice thing about it

Would be a great manga or comic book type read with lots of angry kapow! Zowee! moves and crying love scenes (picture giant eyeball with trembling tear )

You can open any page and not be lost

5.0 out of 5 stars An unusual story.
Reviewed in Australia on July 17, 2024
This was one of my two Amazon First Reads for July. I am so glad I chose it.

Doctor Jonas Cullen had developed a theory that there are multi universes. When he and his wife Amanda have a car accident and she is killed, he is determined to find her in one of the other universes.

Jonas sets out to find a parallel universe where Amanda is still alive. However, things do no always work out for him.

The story is fast paced, with trauma, love, hate, friends and enemies.

This is an interesting story and I loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nobel prize winning doctor travels between universes like Doctor Who - but without a tardis
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 6, 2024
Well this was something different, although I can't pretend to understand all the mumbo jumbo about quantum physics and slipping from one universe to another (I don't understand Doctor Who half the time either). Jonas embarks on an epic journey, travelling between infinite parallel universes, meeting people who are aleady dead in his own world, all with the hope of reuniting with his beloved wife after they were involved in a tragic road accident two years ago. It sounds a bit like fantasy science fiction nonsense, but it's written in a way that makes you wonder if it could be possible. The book skips backwards and forwards in time so you get an idea of how Jonas and Amanda came together and the depth of their relationship. If you skip over the technical scientific bits, and suspend disbelief sometimes (in particular the ease and lightning speed he manages to get a credit card and passport in a world where he's been dead for two years), it's a beautiful story. I read it quite quickly as I had to find out if Jonas and Amanda were reunited in another universe somewhere. But I won't give anything away!

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit too obvious for me
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 18, 2024
I'm never really happy when an author mixes science fiction with romance. When I digested all the classic sci-fi books across the years (Asimoth, Heinlein, Clarke etc), I was happy to suspend belief in the science for a jolly good read. This book, although well written by someone who knows his science, for me slips into love and romance a little too easily. The first chapter of the book gripped me tightly but, as the story unfolded, the ease at which the characters 'cropped up and died' became a little tiresome and even obvious. Things happen, often in a predicatable manner and on a repetitive basis. Maybe, at the end of the day, I'm sad that I just can't believe that anyone could love someone that much. In fact I'd rather believe the science!

A really different kind of story that kept me guessing. I can recommend this to anyone who likes "what ifs". I won't give anything away but if you're the right age then MIKA's Any Other World came to mind when I'd finished it.
