ww2dbaseSubmarine USS Pollack was commissioned into service in Jan 1937. She had her shakedown cruise in the Caribbean Sea between Jun and Sep 1937. She was assigned to the west coast of the United States in Dec 1937 and remained in that region for the following year as a member of the Submarine Division 13 of the US Navy Scouting Force. In Oct 1939, she was relocated to Pearl Harbor in the US territory of Hawaii. When the Pacific War began in Dec 1941, she was underway from San Francisco, California, United States to Pearl Harbor. Upon arriving at Pearl Harbor two days after the attack, she was immediately dispatched (along with two other submarines, USS Gudgeon and USS Plunger) to Japanese waters; as they arrived off Honshu late on 31 Dec 1941, they became the first American warships in Japanese waters in the Pacific War. On 7 Jan 1942, USS Pollack sank Japanese cargo ship Unkai Maru No. 1 and became the first US Navy Pacific Fleet submarine to achieve a confirmed kill. She embarked on 11 war patrols in the Pacific War between 1941 and 1944 and would earn ten battle stars for her successful war tenure. She spent 1945 as a training submarine at the Submarine School at New London, Connecticut, United States. She was decommissioned before the end of 1945, and would be sold for scrap in 1947.
