Yve Blake is an Australian screenwriter, songwriter, and playwright. She wrote the musical FANGIRLS.

Career

Yve Blake was born in Sydney, Australia, and as a teenager took drama classes at Australian Theatre for Young People. After moving to England to study at Central School of Speech and Drama, Blake dropped out and developed her play Sugar Sugar as part of the Royal Court Theatre's Young Playwright's program. The play had its Australian premiere in Melbourne in 2014. [1] That year, her next play Then sold-out at London's Vault Festival, [2] and she returned to the Vault in 2015 with Lie Collector, a musical comedy. [3] Then was later performed in Australia by the Australian Theatre for Young People. [1]

In 2019, Blake premiered her musical FANGIRLS (stylised in all uppercase) at Queensland Theatre. The musical won the 2019 Sydney Theatre Award for Best Mainstage Musical, the Matilda Award for Best Musical or Cabaret, the 2020 AWGIE Award for Music Theatre, [4] and was recognised for New Australian Writing for Music theatre at 2022's Green Room Awards. [5]

Alana Valentine is an Australian playwright, dramatist, librettist and Director working in theatre, film, opera and television. As a playwright, she won the Helpmann Award. Valentine first worked with Vicki Gordon Music Productions to create the First Nations show Barefoot Divas, Walk a Mile in My Shoes. The work premiered at the Sydney Festival in 2012 and the Wellington International Arts Festival in 2013 touring the USA and Canada in 2014 before selling out the Hong Kong International Arts Festival in 2015. In 2016 Gordon commissioned Valentine and Ursula Yovich to co-write the First Nations rock musical Barbara and the Camp Dogs presented on stage in December 2017 at Belvoir in Sydney and touring nationally in 2019. The work was critically acclaimed winning best Original Score and Best Musical in the 2019 Helpmann Awards and four Green Room Awards (2020) for Best Writing, Best Music Composition, Best Production and Best Performance. Fangirls is an Australian stage musical with book, music and lyrics by Yve Blake. It concerns 14-year-old Edna, a diehard fan of the biggest boy band in the world, True Connection, and its lead singer Harry. It was inspired by interviews with hundreds of teenage fangirls.
