Bermuda competed in the Summer Olympic Games for the first time at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. After gaining IOC recognition in February 1936, Bermuda were invited to take part in the 1936 Summer Olympics. With the financial backing of Sir Howard Trott, a team of swimmers would be sent. Whitfield Fredrick "Chummy" Hayward a successful businessman and an accomplished athlete, arranged for American coach William Brooks to come to Bermuda to train the swimmers and also persuaded Leonard Spence an ex-world breaststroke record holder [1] to move from British Guiana to Bermuda in order to compete for them. He traveled to Berlin as the team manager, and carried the flag at the opening ceremony. [2]

The 1936 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XI Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event held in 1936 in Berlin, Germany. Berlin won the bid to host the Games over Barcelona, Spain, on 26 April 1931, at the 29th IOC Session in Barcelona. It marked the second and most recent time the International Olympic Committee gathered to vote in a city that was bidding to host those Games.
Dana Whitney Vollmer is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic gold medalist, and former world record-holder. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, she won a gold medal as a member of the winning United States team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay that set the world record in the event. Eight years later at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Vollmer set the world record on her way to the gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly, and also won golds in the 4×100-meter medley relay and 4×200-meter freestyle relay. She won three medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Bermuda sent a delegation to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The games marked Bermuda's twenty-first Olympic appearance since its debut in 1936. The 2008 delegation included six athletes: Tyrone Smith and Arantxa King in long jump, Jillian Terceira in individual jumping on horseback, Kiera Aitken and Roy-Allan Burch in swimming, and Flora Duffy in triathlon. Bermuda did not win any medals in the Beijing games.

This was the country's first appearance in a skiing discipline. Murphy finished 88th in the 15 kilometre freestyle event, the only one he was entered into.

Charles George Hutter, Jr. was an American competition swimmer who represented the United States at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. He competed for the second-place U.S. team in the first round of the men's 4×100-meter freestyle relay. Hutter was not eligible to receive a medal, however, because only swimmers who competed in the relay event received medals under the swimming rules in effect for the 1936 Olympics.
