Berhampur University is a public teaching-cum-affiliating university in Brahmapur, Odisha, India.

History

Berhampur University was established on 2 January 1967 as an affiliating University by the Odisha Act 21 of 1966. Lingaraj Law College is the only constituent college of the university. [2]

Campus

The present campus is known as Bhanja Vihar, named after Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja, a celebrated poets of Odisha. The campus is spread over about 250 acres (1.0 km2) and is about 12 kilometres from the city of Brahmapur and about six kilometres from Gopalpur beach.

Academics

The university gas 24 departments in the streams of Science, Humanities and Business Studies at the postgraduate level, and carries out Ph.D. & D.Litt. programmes. It offers self-financing PG courses in Finance, Pharmacy & Women's studies. The university also offers a B.Ed. course on self-financing mode. [3] It offers 28 undergraduate and postgraduate courses through its constituent colleges as well as in distance education mode through its Harihar Mardaraj Distance Education Centre. [4]

In October 2021, Khallikote University merged [5] with Berhampur University and the syndicate of the university created four new P.G. departments in Biotechnology, Library & Information Science, Tourism & Travel Studies and Environment Studies.

Accreditation

Berhampur University was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an "A" grade. [6]

Affiliated colleges

Earlier the university had the territorial jurisdiction over Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri districts with over 180 affiliated colleges. As per the recent decision of the Government of Odisha, the territorial jurisdiction of Berhampur University has been redefined and the colleges located in the districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri have been transferred to Vikram Dev University, Jeypore as of the academic session 2023-24. Malkangiri, historically known as Malikamardhangiri, is a town and municipality in Malkangiri district in the Indian state of Odisha. It is the headquarter of the Malkangiri district. Malkangiri has been the new home of the East Bengali refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan, who have been rehabilitated since 1965 under the Dandakaranya Project. Some Sri Lankan Tamil refugees were also rehabilitated in the town, following the armed struggle of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the early 1990s, although most of them have now returned to their country. Currently, it is one of the most naxalite-affected areas of the state, and is a part of the Red Corridor.

Vikram Dev University is a public state university located in the city of Jeypore, Koraput district in Odisha, that offers courses primarily at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It was established in 1947 by Maharaja of Jeypore Sri Vikram Dev IV or Vikram Deo Verma as Jeypore College and later named after him.

One of the most eminent artistes of Odissi classical music in the 20th century, he was known for his vocal renditions & Bina recitals on gramophone records & over the All India Radio, as well as his pioneering efforts in institutionalizing the training of Odissi music by setting up one of the earliest music universities in erstwhile Odisha, the Gandhiji Sangita Kalamandira at Boirani, Ganjam that remained active from 1940 until Patra's demise in 1979.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vikram Dev</span> Raja of Jeypore

Vikram Dev I or Vikram Dev was the ruler of Jeypore from 1758 to 1781. He succeeded his brother Lal Krishna Dev. He retransferred the capital from Narayanapatna to Jeypore which had been deserted from the time of Balaram Dev in 1711. In the last years of his reign, the kingdom was demoted to a zamindari after they were defeated by the British.

Founded as Union College in 1878, the institution became a university in 2021. The university has a student enrolment of nearly 5,000. It is one of the oldest educational institutes in Odisha.
